PARKERSBURG — It was only fitting that Kyrstin Boso score a goal and keeper Emilee Owens pitch a shutout as the two Patriots soccer players were recognized on senior night Tuesday at Erickson All-Sports Facility.

Peyton Sellers also added two first-half goals and Marie Silvis tacked on another off a laser from nearly 35 yards out as South defeated Williamstown 4-0.

Boso primarily played a backup role until this season. Her goal at the 2:26 mark of the second half capped the scoring.

“I was ecstatic – I was trying to get a goal the whole game and I finally did,” said Boso, who plans to attend West Virginia University at Parkersburg. “Tonight felt like a new chapter was beginning. I’ve played soccer for 13 years and it will be hard to give it up.”

Owens faced her share of oncoming shot attempts from Williamstown but kept the net clean as the Patriots improved to 6-7-3. During a halftime ceremony, both Owens and Boso walked down midfield with their parents at their side.

“Like Kyrstin mentioned, walking at midfield was like closure,” Owens said. “This is probably the best year I’ve had health-wise. I haven’t been injured, so that probably was the best thing.”

The first goal occurred as a result of Sellers’speed. She gained possession near midfield and maintained the dribble as she outran three defenders while approaching the net area

The sequence came down to a 1-on-1 between Sellers and the keeper, and Sellers found an opening to put South in front 1-0 with 22:57 remaining before halftime.

“Peyton had some nice composure getting those goals in,”South coach Ron Bucholtz said. “Earlier in the season, she’s had a couple of breakaways where she didn’t quite have that composure.”

Less than a minute later, a through ball found Sellers deep in Williamstown territory and the freshman found another opening to increase the lead to 2-0 with 22:16 showing.

As for the second half, there is a reason why the South coaching staff tags Silvis as the “Howitzer.” Her shot attempt from deep rivaled the exit velocity of your best sluggers.

With 19:22 left in regulation, South moved in front 3-0.

“I’m going to say Marie possesses the most powerful leg in the state,” Bucholtz said. “When she connects, she’s like a Jozy Barton and some of the girls we’ve had in the past. Her goal was just a pure strike of the ball.

“When she hits it right, it’s moving. It’s a knuckler and has some serious heat behind it. My assistant coach gets together with her and sometimes I’ve seen him jump out of the way on some of her shots.”

Williamstown (7-8-1) was on the cusp of ruining the shutout in the final minutes of the second half. A nifty give-and-go from Kaidence Perdue to Kadence Bandy along the right hash deep in South territory nearly resulted in a test for Owens, but nothing materialized.

On the exchange of possession, South rushed the ball near the Williamstown post. When the Yellowjacket keeper tried to clear a shot on goal, the ball flipped backwards and nearly resulted in an own goal.

The Patriots kept the attack in play and Boso was able to drive home a rebound.

“Today, as much as any game this season, and probably more so we took it to the opponent and we possessed the ball,” Bucholtz said. “We had the ball down at their end of the field more than in our end. I’m very pleased to see Kyrstin come up and help the team this year. She’s had an amazing senior season. And I’m glad she’s been with our program all four years. She has been playing behind some really good talent the last few years. She is a kid who has stuck with it.

“As for Emily we were able to work her into the lineup – she joined us late her freshman season after a thumb injury from basketball. We didn’t know who she was until one of our coaches said they have a kid who might be coming out to try goalie. We threw some balls at her on day and it was like, ‘Yeah, we can work with this.’ She’s developed into one of the best, if not the best goalkeeper in the state this year.”
