PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg had leads in the opening two sets here Tuesday night inside Memorial Fieldhouse, but the youthful Big Reds couldn’t find a way to solve Warren’s hitting barrage as the Warriors left town with a 25-15, 25-19 and 25-12 sweep.
The 16-5 Warriors of head coach Ann Skufca, who close out the regular season with a noon match Saturday at New Lexington, received double figure kill efforts from Elayna Greenwalt (16), Taylor Greenwalt (12) and Sydney Starcher (10).
“It was good to be able to see the girls go on the road again and win together,” admitted coach Skufca, who got three aces from Brooke Walters and two apiece by Mya Stemple, Bralynn Bonnette and libero Remi Elzey.
“There’s a couple of adjustments that we did to handle Kennedy Porter and she’s a tremendous athlete, but everyday is a chance to continue to get better.”
Porter finished with five kills for the Big Reds, who got seven downed spikes and six assists from Ava Sayre, eight assists by Kelina Utietiang and two aces apiece from libero Brenan Harvey and Chloe Gribble.

“They have great hitters and Ann does a phenomenal job with those kids and she has ever since I’ve known here. They buy into it,” said Big Red head coach Tammy Fisher. “The kids here are doing good. You know I had two freshmen out there most of the time. I can’t complain. We just got to keep point by point and keep getting the rotation until I find one that we like and then go with it. People don’t realize that yeah we have three seniors, but then the rest of the team is very young.
“I don’t even know how many sophomores. I quit counting. A lot of them haven’t had a lot of experience out there, but they are doing a good job. They really are. They hung with them. They’ve got hitters and they can place the ball. We were getting blocks on them so I wasn’t unhappy with that. We just got to give a little bit more effort. It’s October. We still got three to four weeks to get everything ironed out and ready to go.”
The opening set was a game of runs as Stemple opened the match with an ace as the Warriors bolted out to a 6-0 edge with the help of three Elayna Greenwalt kills and a Bonnette block of Calista Mace.
However, Sayre got her first kill and after Kennedy had a kill and a block, Harvey’s ace tied it at six. Despite an 11-10 cushion, a Taylor Greenwalt mash got the Warriors going as the visitors scored 10 straight, which featured Walters’ trio of aces.
Parkersburg, which slipped to 9-13 and has a 5:30 p.m. home quad on Thursday when Belpre, Parkersburg Catholic and Williamstown invade, led 8-7 in set two after Bella Bowman had a kill from a Utietiang assist.

Gribble’s ace kept the Big Reds in front at 12-10, but a Taylor Greenwalt ace and then a kill by Elayna Greenwalt pushed the Warriors back ahead 14-12.
Ily Bowman followed with a kill for PHS to close it to within one and the red and white finally tied it at 16-all via a Sayre kill, but the Warriors ran off the next four points and coach Fisher called timeout after Elayna Greenwalt’s downed spike. Bonnette’s ace made it 22-18 and Elzey served for the final two points.
Down 6-3 in the must-win third set, Porter had a solo block on Elayna Greenwalt and then teamed up with Gribble on a double block of Taylor Greenwalt, which made it 6-5, but Warren went on a 15-2 spurt aided by a pair of Elzey aces to win going away as Walters earned match point on Elayna Greenwalt’s block of Porter.
Warren will enter tournament play next Thursday as the No. 4 seed at home versus fifth-seeded Waverly.
“Next Thursday is the first tournament game and that’s what we want to continue to accomplish and get prepared for,” added coach Skufca. “Hopefully everything continues to gel together and the girls work day in and day out to improve their skills. We just hope everything is finalized for the start of the postseason come Thursday.”
