Waterford boys golf wins district, advances to state

McDERMOTT — Waterford scored 318 as a team, 16 strokes better than runner-up Manchester, to win the Division III Southeast District title and advance to the state tournament.
It’s the Wildcats’ first state tournament berth since 2015. Head coach Tyson Powers’ squad was led by junior Reese Lang, who captured Medalist honors with a 1-over par 73.
For his efforts, Lang earned District Player of the Year honors.
Competing at Elks Country Club, Waterford also got solid scores from Brock Hurley (78), Luke Hvizdzak (83), Braun Doak (84) and Briceson Cline (85).
Manchester (334) and Portsmouth West (335) were second and third, respectively, in the team standings.
Brock Hurley carded a 6-over par 78, followed by Luke Hvizdzak’s 83, Braun Doak’s 84 and Briceson Cline’s 85. The Boys finished with a team score of 318.
In Division I, the Marietta boys were crowned sectional champions at Crown Hill Golf Club.
The Tigers scored 318 as a team, seven strokes better than runner-up Sheridan.
The Warren Warriors also had a nice showing, placing third (348) to advance to districts along with fourth-place Jackson (358) and fifth-place Miami Trace (364).
Individually, three Tigers finished atop the standings, with Owen Heslop claiming Medalist honors at 73. Anthony Discini (77) was the runner-up while Keaton Mace (78) came in third.
Warren’s top finisher was William Nuzum, who finished eighth at 82.
The Warriors also got 85s from Ian Gardner and Aiden Lipscomb and 96s from Jaxon Venham and Curtis Reynolds.
