Week 7 preview: Fort Frye, Warren to play at home

BEVERLY — Since a week one loss to Barnesville, the Fort Frye Cadets have been on an absolute roll.

The Eric Huck-coached Cadets will look to continue that roll Friday night when they play host to the (2-3) Greenbrier West Cavaliers.

The Fort Frye defense has not allowed more than seven points in a game since the season opening loss and they own wins over West Muskingum, Wheeling Central Catholic, Waterford and Caldwell by a combined score of 135-14.

In last week’s 31-7 win over Caldwell the seven points the Cadets did allow came on a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.

Fort Frye’s defense has not allowed a single point in an incredible 14 quarters of football.

That fumble return came on the opening kick off of the game and the Cadets offense would answer with 31 unanswered points.

Fort Frye got touchdown runs from Sam Bricker, Tyce Beardsley, Gavin Rauch and quarterback Grady Hesson as well as a 35-yard field goal from Tytan Waller.

The Cavaliers were shut out last week by Man 20-0 but do own wins over Summers County (52-12) and Pocahontas County (16-14).

Key players for Greenbrier West include running back/linebacker Ben Butler and tight end/defensive end Colton Dunbar.

Last season Fort Frye blanked the Cavs on the road 27-0.

JOHN MARSHALL (3-1) at WARREN (1-5)

VINCENT — The struggles continued for first-year head coach Jason Gandee and his Warren Warriors last Saturday afternoon as they were beaten soundly at home by the Athens Bulldogs by a final score of 44-7.

Friday night the Warriors will host a very good team in the John Marshall Monarchs looking to notch their second win of the season.

Warren notched their only win of the season back in week number three with an overtime win over Logan (27-21).

Since that win the Warriors have lost three games in a row to Independence, Union Local and Athens by a combined margin of 114-7.

In last week’s loss to Athens, senior running back Eric Carr accounted for the only Warrior touchdown as he scored on a 2-yard sprint in the closing minute of the opening half.

Carr ran for 68 yards on 18 carries, while Declan Johnson got the nod at quarterback and completed 6-of-10 pass attempts for 44 yards and a pick.

John Marshall owns wins over Marietta (23-21), Weir (42-12) and Bellaire (34-26).

The Monarchs saw their three-game win streak snapped last week as they fell to Parkersburg South 41-14.

Key players to watch for the Cavaliers are quarterback Kayden Knapp, running back Dalton Cooper and receivers Landen Snyder and Cam Martin.

Last season at home the Warriors doubled up on John Marshall 24-12.

WATERFORD (4-2) at SOUTHERN (1-5)

RACINE — The Waterford Wildcats broke a modest two-game losing streak last week with a win over Eastern (28-13).

The Eric McCutcheon-coached Wildcats will look to make it two in a row Friday when they visit the Southern Tornadoes in a Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division tussle.

The Wildcats have played an extremely difficult schedule early on as their two losses have come against teams with a combined 10-1 record in Nelsonville-York and Fort Frye.

Waterford owns wins over quality opponents in Vinton County, Caldwell and Shenandoah.

In last week’s win over Eastern, the ‘Cats got a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown from Weston Fairchild as well as rushing and receiving touchdowns from Trevin Zimmer.

Quarterback Hayden Jones led the way with 173 yards rushing on 24 carries including a 4-yard touchdown run.

Southern’s lone win of the season came against winless Green back in week number four and they have suffered conference losses to Trimble and Eastern the past two weeks.

Among the key players to watch for the Tornadoes are receiver Wyatt Smith and running back Jake Wickline.

Last season in Waterford the Wildcats downed Southern 42-14.

FRONTIER (2-4) at CONOTTON VALLEY (4-2)

BOWERSTOWN — One week after stubbing their toe in a disappointing 37-14 loss to cross-river rival St. Marys, the Frontier Cougars need a win in a big way when they visit the Conotton Valley Rockets Friday night.

The Damon Metheney-coached Cougars need to start piling up wins in a hurry to have any chance at qualifying for the post season.

Frontier trailed by just two points at the half last week against the Devils but allowed 29-points in the second half.

The Cougars made a change behind center as Aaden Bills took over for Avery Powell allowing Powell to go back to the wide receiver position that he excelled in last season.

Bills completed 20-of-35 pass attempts for 255 yards including four connections with Powell for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Austyn Kephart caught eight balls for 167 yards including a 67-yard touchdown pass from Bills right before the end of the first half.

The Rockets come into the game on a bit of a high note after back-to-back wins over Brownsville (46-7) and Bridgeport (40-23).

Some names to keep an eye on for Conotton Valley include quarterback Kaden Leggett and receivers Kamden Wright and Gavin Haney.

Last season Conotton Valley downed the Cougars 46-20 in New Matamoras.

TRIMBLE (4-2) at BELPRE (2-4)

BELPRE — The Belpre Eagles were unable to capitalize last week on the momentum they gained with a 56-0 win the week before over winless Green.

The Golden Eagles were beaten by Steubenville Catholic Central 51-18 last week, their fourth loss of the season.

Friday night Belpre will host a Trimble Tomcat team in a Tri-Valley Hocking Division showdown that they haven’t beaten in their last 18 tries.

The Belpre quarterback-receiver tandem of Malik Currie and Malakai Ensor delivered once again against WCC as they connected on yet another touchdown pass.

Currie completed 7-of-12 pass attempts for 86 yards while Ensor caught 4 balls for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Alex Parker picked up 47 yards on the ground while Currie carried the ball 12 times for 55.

The last time the Eagles got the best of Trimble was way back in 1994.

Trimble bounced back from a tough week five loss to Shenandoah last week with a 34-26 win over Southern.

Among the key contributors for Trimble are quarterback Paul Sharp and running backs Trevor Gowen and Luke Osbrone.

Last season in Glouster the Tomcats routed Belpre 52-6.

JOHN GLENN (3-3) at MORGAN (4-2)

MCCONNELSVILLE — The Morgan Raiders are officially playoff contenders.

Morgan will look to take a giant step towards reaching that goal Friday night when they host the John Glenn Little Muskies.

The Raiders won for the second time in a row last week with a 42-28 win over West Muskingum.

The Seth Brown-led Raiders got a couple of touchdown runs apiece from Tanner Bankes and McGwire Winner along with a 23-yard pass from Casen Foley to Arlis Ponchak.

Kicker Jude Garber had a big game as well as he made field goals from 29 and 42 yards in the second quarter.

The Raiders are currently ranked 10th in the latest D-5 standings with the top 12 teams advancing to the playoffs.

The Little Muskies come into the game even up on the season but in the midst of a modest two-game losing streak after suffering losses to Sheridan and Meadowbrook.

John Glenn is led by quarterback Owen Edwards and receiver Ryder Pennington.

The Muskies have their work cut out for them as they currently sit in the No. 18 position in the latest D-III standings.

Last year in New Concord, John Glenn downed the Raiders 28-16.

SHENANDOAH (3-3) at MONROE CENTRAL (2-4)

WOODSFIELD — The Shenandoah Zeps will look to stretch their winning streak to four Friday night when they make the trip across State Route 78 to take on the Monroe Central Seminoles.

The Mac McLean-coached Zeps got off to a rough start as they went 0-3 to begin the season but they have turned their season around with wins over Buckeye Trail (28-8), Trimble (36-6) and Shadyside (37-14).

The Zeps need to continue their hot streak to have a shot at reaching the playoffs as they are currently ranked number 18 in the latest D-6 standings.

Key players for Shenandoah include quarterback Brody Brown and running back/line backers Caden and Cole Vanfossen.

The Seminoles come into the game on a bit of a high note after a 47-12 win over Magnolia that snapped a two-game losing skid.

Monroe Central scored 28 first-quarter points to put things away early against Magnolia.

Last season in Sarahsville, the ‘Noles blanked Shenandoah 34-0.

CALDWELL (3-3) at BISHOP ROSECRANS (3-3)

ZANESVILLE — The Caldwell Redskins have found magic in their new stadium this fall as they are a perfect 3-0 at home.

Unfortunately for the Chance Rucker-coached Redskins that success hasn’t followed them onto the road as they are winless in three games away from home.

Friday they hit the road once again as they take on the Bishop Rosecrans.

Caldwell comes into the game looking to bounce back from a 31-7 loss to the Fort Frye Cadets.

Things started wonderfully for the ‘Skins as Gavin Leake recovered a fumble on the opening kick off and returned it 38-yards for a touchdown.

Those would be the only points scored in the game for Caldwell as they were blanked the rest of the way.

The Redskins are quarterbacked by Izic Cool and their three wins on the season have come against Buckeye Trail, Monroe Central and Edison.

Bishop Rosecrans snapped a three-game losing streak last week with a 39-28 win over Fairfield Christian Academy.

The two teams did not play each other last season.

WAHAMA (5-0) at EASTERN (3-2)

REEDSVILLE — The defending state champion Wahama White Falcons are looking more and more like threats to repeat as they reach the halfway point in the season.

Friday night the undefeated White Falcons travel to Eastern to take on an Eagle squad with upset in mind.

Eastern comes into the game losers of two of their last three games including last week’s 28-13 loss to Waterford.

The Eagles are currently ranked 17th in the latest D-6 rankings and need to pile up some wins going forward to work their way into the top-12.

Wahama is averaging over 50 points per game in their first five contests including last week’s 55-6 shellacking of Wirt County.

Last year’s game was a true shootout with Wahama downing Eastern 55-31.

Starting at $2.99/week.
