Marietta College, 41, Wilmington 14
WILMINGTON, Ohio – Vante’ Hodges and Benny Lewis found the end zone twice apiece here Saturday and Joe Tenta completed 20 of 30 attempts for 303 yards as visiting Marietta College snapped a four-game losing streak after handing Wilmington College a 44-14 Ohio Athletic Conference setback.
Marietta College (4-4, 3-4) jumped out to a 13-0 lead thanks to a Lewis 11-yard TD burst and a Hodges 2-yard TD run in the first quarter.
Lewis, who had 71 yards on 12 carries, added a 7-yard score in the second while Tenta hooked up with Dalton Miller for a 20-yard scoring strike late in the second for a 27-7 bulge.
However, De’Anta Sanon returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards only to have Nathaniel Demuth connect on a 26-yard field goal to give the Pioneers a 30-14 halftime lead.
Hodges, who went for game-highs of 23 carries and 93 stripes, scored from 12 yards out in the fourth with 8:23 remaining. Just 47 seconds later, Brady McManaway picked off Isaac Ross and returned it 42 yards for the final six-pointer.
Taison Starr also had an interception and recovered a fumble that was forced by Jonah Asebrook, who finished with a game-high 11 tackles.
MC, which welcomes in Mount Union at 1:30 p.m. next Saturday, was led in receiving by John Sierputowski (4-107), Dalton Miller (4-48), Kenyon Franklin (3-47) and Isaiah Mitchell (5-46).
Wilmington College (3-5, 1-5), which plays at 1:30 p.m. next Saturday at Heidelberg University, managed just 63 rushing yards on 28 attempts. Amare Middleton had a game-high six grabs for 86 yards in the setback.
W.Va. State 52, Glenville State 28
INSTITUTE – Glenville State’s four-game winning streak went by the wayside here Saturday afternoon as the Pioneers fell behind 35-7 late in the third and lost 52-28 to host West Virginia State in Mountain East Conference action.
Joe Dailey started the game with a 3-yard TD run and ended it with a 1-yard TD as the Yellow Jackets (5-4, 4-2) held a 513-424 advantage in total yards that included limiting the Pioneer ground game to 98 yards on 28 carries.
Anthony Garrett, who went 19 of 41 for 326 yards and three touchdowns, found Naseem Pacheco for a 75-yard touchdown at 6:56 of the first to tie the game at seven, but it was all Jackets after that.
Head coach John Pennington’s WVSU squad answered right back when Kaleb Jackson hooked up with favorite target Amare Ary on a 57-yard touchdown pass.
After no one scored in the second and the G-men (5-4, 4-2) only trailing 14-7, the hosts came out and scored the first three touchdowns of the third.
Devin Cox had a 45-yard scoring scamper and then Jackson hit Malik Baker II for a 32-yard touchdown. Glenville State then fell behind 35-7 when Keenan Libecca intercepted Garrett and housed it from 34 yards out.
Jeremiah King, who was limited to 46 yards rushing on 10 carries, scored from the 3 and Garrett’s 32-yard touchdown pass to Tariq Miller cut the deficit to 35-21 entering the fourth, but head coach Mike Kellar’s squad couldn’t get any closer.
Jojo Restall added a 22-yard touchdown run early in the fourth before the Pioneers answered with Miller’s second receiving touchdown from Garrett, this one from 2 yards out.
Prior to Dailey’s final score, State got a 38-yard field goal from Tony Hornbuckle.
Miller (7-117) and Pacheco (3-89) led the wideouts while Baker II (6-91) and Ary (3-74) paced the Jackets, who got big games on the ground from Cox (19-143) and Restall (8-86).
Glenville State, which got 14 tackles and 10 solo from Shary Jefferson and 10 total with six solo from Brandon Penn, will have senior day at 1 p.m. next Saturday versus Wheeling at Parkersburg South’s Erickson All-Sports Facility.
The Yellow Jackets, who watched Jackson complete 15 of 22 for 222 yards, return to action at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Frostburg State.
