Hoops roundup: Cadets edge Tornadoes in battle of unbeatens
ZANESVILLE — Fort Frye faced its toughest test of the season to date Wednesday when it traveled to face West Muskingum in a battle of unbeatens.
The Cadets came out on top for a 36-33 victory to improve to 6-0 on the year. Tied at 33-all with 22 seconds left, Rae Morgenstern made a layup to put FFHS up 35-33.
After a West M miss on the other end, Morgenstern, who had a team-high 12 points, was fouled and made 1 of 2 at the free-throw line to stretch the lead to three with 4.5 seconds on the clock.
The Tornadoes (4-1) settled for a half-court heave that didn’t come close, giving the Cadets the victory.
Ella Dowler knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points for Fort Frye while Ava Huffman added eight.
Jayden Thornton and Lyla Johnson scored 14 points apiece to share game-high honors for West Muskingum, which finished 0 for 6 from the charity stripe.
The Cadets, who led 13-7 after one, 24-18 at halftime and 29-24 going into the fourth, are back in action at 9:15 p.m. Friday when they take on Parkersburg Catholic at Robert C. Byrd.
