Hoops roundup: Warren girls top Philo, 46-34
DUNCAN FALLS — Warren’s defensive prowess was on full display in the first quarter of Saturday’s 46-34 win over Philo.
The Warriors, who improved to 7-2, held the Electrics (5-5) to just two points in the first eight minutes, jumping out to an 8-2 lead which increased to 23-15 by halftime. Warren, which plays host to Fort Frye next Monday, Jan. 5, took a 34-24 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Aubrey Pepper led the visitors with 11 points. DeLaney Gates added 10, Juliana Huffman netted eight, Rylee Arnold tallied seven and Jayda Murray chipped in six.
The Warriors overcame an 8-for-20 performance at the free-throw line.
Philo’s Reagan Miller led all scorers with 13 points while Macy Spiker added seven.
Parkersburg 95, Riverside 67
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Parkersburg junior Frances Guice exploded for a career-high 34 points during the Big Reds’ 95-67 victory here Saturday versus Riverside at the Carolina Invitational.
Riverside, which was paced in scoring by Kyndel Haroski’s 20 and Marley Mangum’s 16, led 21-19 after one but trailed 37-34 at halftime.
The No. 3, Class AAAA Big Reds came out of the break and used a 27-16 edge in the third quarter to take control before closing out the affair with a 31-point fourth.
Lauren Flanagan, who had five 3s for the red and white while Guice drained the other four, finished with 29 points. Kennedy Porter added 20 points while Lucie Cline and Eden DeBord chipped in four markers apiece.
PHS will attempt to start the season at 5-0 when it returns to action at 4 p.m. Monday versus the Green Wave of Summerville, which finished as the 5A, D1 state runner-up last season.
BOYS
Gilmer County 60, Wood County Christian 52 (OT)
WILLIAMSTOWN — A big second half by Wood County Christian forced overtime, but Gilmer outscored the hosts 12-4 in the extra session to escape with a 60-52 win Saturday.
The Titans, who got off the schneid and improved to 1-5, led 18-11 after one and 31-18 at halftime. However, the Wildcats (3-1) went on an 18-8 run in the third to cut it to 39-36 by the start of the fourth. WCCS out-pointed the visitors 12-9 in the fourth to have it knotted at 48-all at the end of regulation.
Remi Huffman led Gilmer, which plays host to Calhoun Friday, with 14 points. Kolten Holbert netted 12, Landon Hartshorn tallied 11, Tyler Ratliff added 10 and Jacob Mick chipped in nine.
Peyton Russell led all scorers with 19 points to pace the Wildcats. Daniel Cunningham finished with 11 and Asher Fenton contributed eight.
