Hoops roundup: Waterford falls to Alexander
ALBANY — Finn Pennock and Reese Lang combined for the bulk of Waterford’s scoring in Tuesday’s game at Alexander, but it wasn’t enough as the Wildcats fell to the Spartans 65-57.
Pennock scored 27 points for the Wildcats, who dropped to 2-5 and play host to Federal Hocking Saturday, while Lang added 19. Lang hit two 3-pointers and 9 for 10 at the free-throw line. Pennock was 8 for 15 at the charity stripe.
Gavin Hiener chipped in six points for Waterford, which trailed 16-13 after one, 34-23 at halftime and 49-40 going into the fourth.
Jace Cooper led all scorers with 29 points for the Spartans (3-5). He knocked down three treys and was 8 for 11 at the foul line. Noah Graves netted 15 points for the hosts.
Doddridge County 67, Williamstown 45
WEST UNION, W.Va. — A Class AA showdown Tuesday between Doddridge County and Williamstown resulted in a 67-45 win for the host Bulldogs, who improved to 6-0 on the year.
Doddridge, ranked third in this week’s WVSACA Coaches Poll, led 16-9 after one and 31-19 at halftime. The Bulldogs went on a 14-0 run in the third quarter, fueled by seven points from Maddox Jones and six from Will Adams, to extend the advantage to 54-38 going into the final eight minutes.
Adams led DCHS, which visits Robert C. Byrd next Tuesday, with 12 points. The Bulldogs also got 10 points from Josh DeHaven, eight apiece from Jaden Solomon and Landon Thomas and seven each from Jones, Blake Mitchell and Landon Thomas.
The Yellowjackets, who dropped to 2-2 and play host to South Harrison next Tuesday, got a game-high 13 points from Caleb Atkinson, eight from Wyatt Powell, seven from Al Schmidt and six from Nate Nicely.
Tyler Consolidated 87, St. Marys 53
ST. MARYS — Landon Boggs’ game-high 18 points helps lift Tyler Consolidated to an 87-53 win over host St. Marys Tuesday.
It was the first win of the season for the Silver Knights, who play Monroe Central at 5 p.m. Friday at Marietta College. Cole Lemasters and Kolbin Highley tallied 10 points each while Coley Bell, John Mace and Brody Giovinazzo netted eight apiece. Garrett Bordenkircher chipped in seven points for TCHS, which led 22-12 after one and 46-34 at halftime. The Knights put things away in the third quarter, when they outscored the Blue Devils 29-8 to build a 75-42 cushion going into the final eight minutes.
St. Marys, which dropped to 0-4 and visits Calhoun County Friday, got 12 points from Jude Bills, 10 from Trevor Maley and nine apiece from Andre Anderson and Roe Maston. Greg Jemison contributed six points for the Blue Devils, who committed 29 turnovers in the contest.
