Hoops roundup: Tigers run past past Cadets, 66-31

Marietta set the tone with a 15-0 run to start the game and cruised to a 66-31 win over Fort Frye Thursday at Sutton Gym.

The Tigers (14-2) led 26-4 after one as they went 10 for 12 from the floor in the opening period. Logan Grosklos scored 11 of his 15 points in the first eight minutes, while Terry Tompkins accounted for all four of Fort Frye’s first-quarter points.

Marietta took a 42-15 advantage into halftime and stretched it to 56-21 after three.

Zaiden Wittekind led Marietta with 17 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Owen Riley added 12 points, six boards and a game-high five assists while Braiden Plaugher knocked down three 3-pointers for nine points to go along with a pair of blocks. Lucas Miller chipped in four dimes.

The Tigers, who extended their win streak to 11, shot 54% (27 for 50) from the floor, including 10 for 20 from beyond the arc.

The Cadets, who were coming off an emotional overtime win over Caldwell on Tuesday, were led by Kainan Bradford’s 12 points and seven rebounds. FFHS (7-8) finished 25.6% (10 for 39) from the floor, including 3 for 20 from deep.

The Cadets are back in action Tuesday when they play host to Federal Hocking. Marietta was scheduled to play Morgan at home Saturday, but that game has been postponed to Feb. 10 due to impending weather.

GIRLS

St. Marys 57, Ritchie County 45

ST. MARYS — St. Marys completed a season sweep of Ritchie County with a 57-45 victory over the Rebels Thursday as part of the 21st annual St. Marys Invitational.

Saturday’s consolation and championship games have been postponed due to inclement weather.

The Blue Devils (9-4) got off to a hot start, leading 15-8 after one and 33-17 at halftime. Brynnley Bulluck led SMHS, which visits South Harrison next Thursday, with 21 points, four assists and four steals. Landry Riggs added 15 points, three dimes and three steals while Laney Watkins and Rylee Renner tallied seven points apiece. Watkins also posted a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with four assists and three steals. St. Marys shot 43.8% (21 for 48) from the floor.

Elsa Law led the Rebels, who travel to Doddridge County Tuesday, with 21 points. Abbigayl Cox added seven points while Callie Smith and Jordin Bailey pitched in six each. RCHS is now 10-3 with two of its losses coming at the hands of the Blue Devils.

Belpre 49, Frontier 27

ST. MARYS — Belpre held Frontier to just nine points in the second half to pull away for a 49-27 win in the opening game of the St. Marys Invitational Thursday.

Saturday’s consolation and championship games have been postponed due to inclement weather.

Belpre led 9-7 after a quarter and outscored FHS 18-11 in the second to take a 27-18 lead into halftime. The Golden Eagles created more separation in the third, outscoring the Cougars 9-2 to make it 36-20 with eight minutes left, and never looked back.

Belpre (5-13) received a game-high 15 points from Madi Lauer. Gracie Bills added 10 points while Addy Stewart and Chey Parsons pitched in six apiece.

Frontier (9-6) got 13 points from Anna Bowersock and seven from Addison Edgard.

Warren 40, John Glenn 35

VINCENT — Warren picked up its second win in a row Thursday, putting together a fourth-quarter rally to defeat John Glenn 40-35.

The Warriors (9-7) led 22-18 at halftime but got outscored 12-5 in the third to fall behind 30-27 going into the fourth. Warren, which snapped a five-game skid when it beat Barnesville on Wednesday, closed the game on a 13-5 run to complete the comeback.

DeLaney Gates led the Warriors with 10 points. Danica Gates and Juliana Huffman added eight points apiece while Rylee Arnold chipped in seven for WHS, which is slated to visit Caldwell on Monday.

The Muskies (4-12) got a game-high 13 points from Ava Windland. Brynli Cavezza added seven while Faith Hayes chipped in six.
