Hoops roundup: Williamstown girls knock off Wheeling Central
WHEELING, W.Va. — At the beginning of the week, Class AA No. 3 Williamstown was staring straight into a gauntlet.
After impressive wins over Doddridge County and St. Marys, the Yellowjackets put an exclamation point on the week with a 50-36 victory over No. 2 Wheeling Central on Saturday.

“I told the girls earlier in the week that if we could get out of this week 2-1, I’d be happy,” said Williamstown head coach Danny Bunch. “It’s hard to beat three solid teams in one week, and to finish it off with a win at Wheeling Central — really proud of the girls.”
Williamstown led 12-11 after one, 25-15 at halftime and 33-23 after three. Central finished just 24% (13 for 54) from the floor while standout Seneca Heller was hounded by Anna Cosner and held to 14 points.
“That’s sort of our staple,” Bunch said. “We’re sort of a defensive minded team. The girls executed our defensive gameplan. To hold Wheeling Central to 15 points in the first half in their gymnasium speaks volume. We knew our assignments, pressured them fullcourt, and the girls did a good job of communicating and rotating.
“Anna Cosner did an amazing job. Anna didn’t score much, but it felt like scored 40 points with her defensive effort.”
Cosner posted a team-high five assists. Arissa Burt pulled down a whopping 16 boards to go along with nine points and three steals. Offensively, Quinn Bunch had the hot hand for the Yellowjackets, burying seven 3-pointers and netting a game-high 24 points.
“She’s done it all week,” coach Bunch said. “We faced a gauntlet this week, and she’s hit 17 3s. What she’s doing against these teams is magnificent, but I’m proud of her teammates for finding her and making good passes, too.”
Maggie Frye finished with eight points and four dimes while Chloe Mulligan chipped in six for Williamstown, which is slated to play host to South Harrison on Tuesday.
