Weather wreaks havoc on local hoops slate

As basketball season heats up, the temperature gets colder and the snow gets heavier.

A weekend winter storm has put a halt to the local high school hoops slate this week with Monday and Tuesday’s games getting wiped out.

The Marietta girls, who dropped a 39-23 decision to New Lexington last Wednesday to snap a three-game winning streak, were set to play Zanesville at home Monday and at Barnesville Tuesday. The Zanesville game has been rescheduled for Feb. 5, while the Barnesville game has been canceled.

The Warren girls, who righted the ship with a pair of wins over John Glenn and Barnesville last week, had a road game versus Caldwell set for Monday. That contest was postponed, with a makeup date to be determined.

Tuesday is where things get a little more complicated as there was a full slate of games that were affected.

Starting with the Frontier boys, who had their five-game win streak snapped Friday against Belpre, the Cougars’ road game against Wood County Christian was postponed with no makeup date set.

The Fort Frye boys, who knocked off Caldwell last Tuesday before falling to Marietta, postponed their home game against Federal Hocking. The game has not yet been rescheduled.

The Belpre boys’ trip to Monroe Central was called off. No makeup date has been set. The Golden Eagles defeated Frontier 65-57 Saturday in the St. Marys Invite. AJ Copen made eight 3-pointers in the win, tying Jordan Thornhill and Logan Plummer for the single-game school record.

No makeup date has been set for the Frontier at Magnolia girls game that was scheduled for Tuesday. The Cougars are looking to snap a two-game skid.

Perhaps no team in the Mid-Ohio Valley is riding higher than the Williamstown girls. The Yellowjackets upset the W.Va. Class AA No. 2-ranked Wheeling Central Maroon Knights on Saturday. They were looking to carry that momentum into Tuesday’s home game against South Harrison, but will have to wait as that matchup has been moved to Feb. 3.

Starting at $2.99/week.
