Hoops roundup: Marietta girls take down Zanesville, 42-38

The Marietta Tigers won their third straight game and sixth in their last seven Thursday when they defeated Zanesville 42-38 at Sutton Gym.

Marietta (10-9) jumped out to a hot start and led 13-3 late in the first. Zanesville (12-7) cut it to 24-18 by halftime before opening the third on a 13-2 run to go up 31-26.

Lauren Elliott’s first basket of the game was a 3-pointer at the 7:01 mark in the fourth to tie the game at 31-all. Blaire Reed then put the Tigers back in front on a basket with 6:15 remaining. From there, there were six lead changes, with Braxtyn Kroft’s pair of free throws putting MHS up for good at 39-38 with 3:09 left on the clock.

Neither team scored again until Kroft’s foul shot with 13 seconds left. Kroft missed her second attempt, but teammate Hayleigh Chidester corralled the offensive rebound and dished to Reed, who was fouled and made both freebies to secure the win.

Chidester and Reed scored 10 points apiece to lead the Tigers. Kroft added nine, Fiona Flower netted eight and Elliott chipped in five. Marietta is back in action Saturday when it plays host to Amanda-Clearcreek.

Achala Walker paced the Blue Devils with 10 points. Lakeyah Butcher added nine while Ta’myah Taylor and Ayawna Gladden notched seven apiece.

St. Marys 54, Frontier 37

NEW MATAMORAS — Brynnley Bulluck led all scorers with 24 points to help lead St. Marys past Frontier 54-37 Thursday at Hank Morus Gym.

Bulluck finished with nine rebounds, six steals and four assists for the Blue Devils, who improved to 10-4. Anna Bennett double-doubled with 10 points and 12 boards to go along with four steals. Landrey Riggs added 11 points, six rebounds and three dimes while Laney Watkins chipped in seven rebounds and three assists.

SMHS led 9-6 after one and 20-19 at halftime before taking control in the third, outscoring the Cougars 15-5 to go up 35-24 with eight minutes to play.

Frontier (10-7) got 15 points from Anna Bowersock and 12 from Willow Smitley. The Cougars play Cameron at noon on Saturday in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference 1A final.

Parkersburg South 63, Riverside 39

BELLE — Parkersburg South freshmen Quinn Bolyard, Lindsey Logston and Grace Dotson combined for 49 points to help lead PSHS past Riverside 63-39 Thursday.

Bolyard led all scorers with 20 points for the Patriots, who improved to 11-2 and play host to Huntington at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Logston added 16 points while Dotson tallied 13 — both players grabbed seven rebounds while Logston finished with six steals and four assists.

Emilee Owens contributed six dimes and Kenna Mace netted eight points. South led 21-11 after one, 37-19 at halftime and 51-31 going into the fourth.

Riverside (6-12) got 13 points from Jada Ward and 12 from Ada Ward.

BOYS

Williamstown 68, Tyler Consolidated 65 (OT)

KIDWELL — Tyler Keiser led all scorers with 19 points to lead Williamstown to an overtime victory over Tyler Consolidated Thursday.

Keiser went 7 for 8 at the free-throw line for the Yellowjackets, who improved to 8-6 and play host to Oak Glen on Saturday. Caleb Atkinson added 15 points for WHS while Nate Frye and Wyatt Powell chipped in 11 and nine, respectively.

The Silver Knights (4-11) got 10 points apiece from Landon Boggs and Cam Strode. Ashton Morris finished with nine, Brody Giovinazzo tallied eight, Cole Lemasters netted seven and John Mace and Coley Bell pitched in six each.

Wahama 64, St. Marys 47

ST. MARYS — St. Marys led 20-14 after the first quarter Thursday against Wahama, but the White Falcons rallied for a 32-28 halftime lead and added one from there to claim a 64-47 victory.

The Blue Devils (1-13) got 12 points apiece Jude Bills and Roe Maston. Trevor Maley added eight, Andre Anderson seven and Greg Jemison six.

Bills grabbed eight rebounds, Maley tallied five assists and Maston registered 12 blocks.

SMHS plays host to Frontier on Saturday

Waterford 59, Eastern 29

WATERFORD — Reese Lang continued his hot shooting and Gavin Hiener double-doubled to help lead Waterford to a convincing 59-29 win over Eastern Thursday at the Harry Cooper Annex.

Lang, coming off a 34-point performance against Fort Frye on Tuesday, led all scorers with 22 points. He was 7 for 7 at the free-throw line.

Hiener finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Avery Pottmeyer tacked on 13 points, Finn Pennock contributed eight boards and three steals and Weston Fairchild charted six rebounds and three assists.

Waterford, now 9-9 with a home game against Athens set for Saturday, shot 45.7% (21 for 46) and committed just seven turnovers. The Wildcats led 15-6 after one, 27-14 at halftime and 44-23 after three.

Eastern (7-13) got 21 points from Colton Lloyd and six from Sam Balch.

Wood County Christian 56, Valley 45

WILLIAMSTOWN – The free-throw line was kind to Wood County Christian. Not so much for Valley.

Wildcat Daniel Cunningham made 8-of-11 from the charity stripe and finished with a game-high 18 points as WCCS defeated Valley 56-45 on Thursday night.

Trailing 14-6, Valley scored 21 second-quarter points behind three 3-pointers from Kolen Kinkade and took a 27-25 lead into halftime.

Kinkade was held without a field goal in the second half as WCCS answered with a 21-point quarter of its own in the third period behind eight points from Cunningham and another six from Peyton Russell.

Russell and Jaden Blackwell finished with nine points apiece as the Wildcats improved to 7-5.

Valley, which made just 4-of-14 from the free-throw line, received nine points from Gaige Wichterman.
