Hoops roundup: Warriors top ’Cats in double overtime

WATERFORD — Warren turned its double-overtime session with Waterford into a a free-throw shooting contest and managed to pull out a 72-68 win on Monday night.

Blake Grimes scored nine of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to keep Warren even with Waterford at 57-57 going into overtime.

Warren made just two field goals in the extra period, but outscored the Wildcats 15-11 by making 11-of-15 free throws – including 4-of-5 from Hudson Elzey, who finished with a game-high 24 points. Teammate Caleb Tullius scored 16 points, while Liam Grosselin chipped in 11 points.

For Waterford, four players scored in double figures – including Finn Pennock with 230 points and Avery Pottmeyer with 15 points.

Calhoun County 67, St. Marys 63

ST. MARYS – St. Marys nearly completed a mountainous climb before falling to Calhoun County 67-63 in an LKC Placement game, Monday at home.

The Blue Devils fell behind by as many as 20 points before limiting Calhoun to 23 second-half points. St. Marys went into foul mode for the final two minutes and had possession with a chance to tie with just less than a minute remaining in regulation.

“We played much better team basketball in the second half,” St. Marys coach Larry Johnson said.

Roe Maston led St. Marys with 25 points, while Trevor Maley followed with 24 pointers thanks to five made 3-pointers. Teammate Chan Wilkinson just missed a double-double after ending the night with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Girls

Parkersburg Catholic 66, Wood County Christian 39

PARKERSBURG -In what may be a school record, Ellie Kinnison knocked down 12 3-pointers and scored 39 points as Parkersburg Catholic defeated Wood County Christian 66-38 on Monday night.

As a team, the Crusaderettes combined for 18 shots made from beyond the arc. Kinnison connected on six threes in both the first and second half, including four in the second quarter as PCHS built a 38-20 lead.

Macy Singer contributed a pair of threes and finished with nine points for PHCS, For WCCS, Brooke Arnold kept the Wildcats in the game with her 26 points, including 6-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Parkersburg 92, Huntington 55

PARKERSBURG – Something was in the water in Parkersburg down the road as well at Parkersburg High School as the Big Reds combined for 18 made 3-point goals in a 92-55 win over Huntington on Monday.

Lauren Flanagan and Frances Guice accounted for five three apiece. Flanagan, who also dished out seven assists, led the Big Reds with 23 points . Guice added 17 points. In the post, PHS senior Kennedy Porter finished with nine points and seven rebounds.
