Marietta College falls to Christopher Newport, 21-20, in wild extra-inning affair
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Brayden Mazzoni hit a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the tenth inning as Christopher Newport University defeated Marietta College, 21-20, Friday at the D3 Showcase.
The Pioneers fall to 0-2 on the season, while CNU improves to 4-1 overall.
Marietta scored two runs in the top of the tenth to take a 20-18 lead. Jameson Embrescia led off the inning with a solo home run to left. Bryce Bogan walked and moved into scoring position on a sac bunt from Brett Hamel. A wild pitch sent Bogan to third where he scored on a sac fly from Bradley Jones.
In the bottom of the inning, Creston Saunders reached on a one-out, pinch hit single. Jacob Koenig followed with a single to center moving Saunders to third. Logan Adams was hit by a pitch loading the bases for Ashton Hylton.
Hylton reached on a bad hop single to short scoring Saunders and Koenig to tie the game. Mazzoni smacked an 0-1 pitch to right-center scoring Adams for the win.
In a wild game from start to finish, Marietta scored runs in every inning. The Pioneers jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the first and three more in the second. CNU plated five runs in the bottom of the second for a 5-4 lead.
Marietta scored three in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth, but the Captains countered with runs in the third through fifth innings and the score was tied, 10-10, heading to the sixth.
The Etta Express scored seven runs over the next three frames and led 17-10 going into the bottom of the eighth inning. Christopher Newport erupted form eight runs in the eighth for an 18-17 lead.
Drew Mckenna worked a bases loaded walk in the top of the ninth to tie the score, 18-18, and send the game into extra innings.
Zack Molloy led Marietta with four hits. Diego DeCello was 3-for-5 with a home run and five runs batted in. Bogan tied a Marietta College single game record with three doubles on the night. He drove in four runs. Hamel finished with three hits and Trevor Hall had two.
Koenig had four hits for CNU. Aaron Maxie drove in five runs with three hits including a grand slam. Jake Benedict finished with three hits and six runs batted in.
Alex Shelkin (1-0) got the win throwing the final 2.0 innings. He allowed three runs on two hits with three walks and one strikeouts. Ryan Morrison started and went 2.1 innings giving up seven runs on seven hits. All told, CNU used seven pitchers in the game.
Reece Rupert started for the Pioneers and was charged with four runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. Cooper Fiehrer (0-1), the fifth Marietta pitcher, was tagged with the loss. He allowed eight runs, only three earned, on nine hits in 1.2 innings of work.
Marietta is back in action at the D3 Showcase on Saturday against No. 6 ranked Lynchburg. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
