Marietta College stretches win streak to five

VIERA, Fla. -- Marietta College softball won twice on Friday at the Space Coast Spring Games. The Pioneers defeated St. Catherine University, 3-2, and Rivier University, 3-0. Marietta has won five straight and is 6-4 on the season. St. Catherine is 8-5 on the season and Rivier is 0-8 overall.

Marietta executed a perfect first and third double steal in the top of the seventh inning to score the winning run against St. Catherine. Katie Sweeney stole second, drawing the throw that allowed Erin Beeber to steal home.

Becca Streets had RBI singles in the first and fifth innings to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. St. Catherine scored twice in the fifth to tie the game. Grace Swigart had an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch.

Emma Cozza (3-0) got the win in relief. She pitched the final 2.0 innings and didn’t allow any runs on two hits. Aiyana Hancock started and threw 5.0 innings giving up two runs on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Alexa Carlstrom (4-2) went the distance in the circle for St. Catherine’s and allowed three runs on eight hits. She walked three and struck out five.

Streets was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game.

In the game against Rivier, Mallory Gorgacz had a pair of RBI singles in the game. She drove in the Pioneers’ first run in the second with a single to center and then plated the third run of the game in the fourth inning with an infield hot to third. Kenzi Denzer accounted for Marietta’s other run with an RBI single in the second inning.

Candace Walters (3-3) started and got the win. Walter pitched 5.0 innings and allowed three hits with three walks and one strikeout. Hancock earned the save with 2.0 innings of one-hit relief. Hancock walked two and struck out two.

Hayley Rapaglia (0-3) started and took the loss allowing two unearned runs on two hits in 3.0 innings. She walked one and struck out five. Hailey Berube threw 3.0 innings and gave up one run on four hits.

Gorgacz and Denzer both went 2-for-3 in the game for Marietta.

Marietta wraps up play in Florida with games against Grinnell College (10:00 a.m.) and (12:15 p.m.) St. Norbert College on Saturday (Mar.14).
