Pioneer softball picks up a pair of wins
Etta Express falls to Swarthmore
VIERA, Fla. — The Marietta College softball team won a pair of games Wednesday at the Space Coast Spring games.
The Pioneers beat Greenville, 6-5, in eight innings and then downed Monmouth, 6-2.
Marietta improves to 4-4 on the season. Greenville falls to 7-3 overall, while Monmouth is now 3-7 on the season.
Mallory Gorgacz lined a walk-off single to right field, scoring Lauren Musgrove in the bottom of the eighth inning against Greenville. Musgrove tied the game with an RBI single to right that scored Candace Walters, who started the inning at second base due to the international tiebreaker rule. Grace Elliott sacrifice bunted Walters to third before Musgrove and Gorgacz delivered the back-to-back hits.
Walters (1-3) picked up the win throwing the top of the eighth inning. She allowed one unearned run on no hits. Aiyana Hancock started in the circle and worked 3.2 innings giving up four runs on six hits. Emma Cozza tossed 3.1 innings of shutout relief allowing just two hits.
Kayla Kocher (3-1) was tagged with the loss. She took over in the circle in the bottom of the eighth and gave up two unearned runs on two hits. Sarah Salas allowed four runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings, while Lauren Kehl worked 1.2 innings and allowed one hit.
Greenville built a 4-0 lead with two runs in the first inning and two more in the fourth. Marietta rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, 4-4. Katie Sweeney had an RBI double, Allie Sheen smacked a two-run double, and Kylie Cobb plated the fourth run with a sac fly.
Camryn Campbell, Becca Streets, and Musgrove each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.
In the second game, Marietta scored four runs in the last three innings to break a 2-2 tie. Musgrove had an RBI single in the fifth. Streets drove in two runs with a single in the sixth, and Kenzie Denzer had an RBI single in the seventh.
Denzer also drove in a run in the second inning with a double to right center. Adisson Heath got the Pioneers on the board when she scored on an error in the first inning.
Walters (2-3) went the distance in the circle for her second win of the day. She allowed two runs on five hits with two walks. Lydia Overcash (1-2) started and got the loss, throwing 6.0 innings and giving up five runs on 15 hits. Addie Greene pitched the seventh and was charged with one run on two hits.
Musgrove and Denzer each went 3-for-3 to lead the Pioneers. Heath, Streets, Liz White, and Emilie Johnson had two hits apiece.
Marietta plays St. Catherine and Rivier on Friday at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
BASEBALL
LEXINGTON, S.C. — For the second time in two days, Swarthmore College posted a 12-6 win over Marietta College on Wednesday.
The loss drops Marietta to 1-7 on the season, while Swarthmore improves to 10-3 overall.
Swarthmore erupted for six runs in the top of the ninth inning breaking a 6-6 tie. Andrew Firko drove in the winning run with an infield single. Jackson Clemens and Brad Johnston each had two-run base hits, and Aidan Sullivan drove in a run with a ground out.
Jared Bees (0-1) took the loss. Bees started the ninth inning on the mound and gave up six runs on three hits with three walks. Cooper Fiehrer started and allowed five runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Zach Madan, Reece Rupert, and Matthew Farmer also threw in relief for the Pioneers.
David Herrin (3-1) got the win for the Garnet working 1.0 inning and giving up three runs on no hits. Aidan Tinker started and pitched 5.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits.
Swarthmore got out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the first and three more in the third. Marietta got on the board in the third on an RBI double from Michael Ciavolella. The Pioneers picked up a second run in the fourth when Drew McKenna scored on a passed ball.
The Garnet extended its lead to 6-2 with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth. Ciavolella picked up another RBI with a single to right in the seventh. Marietta tied the game with three more runs in the eighth. Shane Rothlisberger scored on an error, McKenna scored on a single from Bryce Bogan, and Cam Coleman scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, 6-6.
Ciavolella went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Diego DeCello and Coleman each had two hits.
