GENEVA, Ohio — Warren senior Sydney Starcher added some hardware to her collection during Friday’s indoor state track meet at SPIRE Institute.
Starcher, a two-time All-Ohioan in outdoor track, placed runner-up in the high jump to earn a spot on the podium.
“I’m really excited,” said Starcher, a Marshall signee. “I really worked hard. My coaches have been so helpful and it’s been really nice to have such a great support system.”
Competing in Division II, Starcher cleared 5-feet-4-inches on her third attempt to clinch second place.
“Consistency was key,” said Starcher, who has been battling illness recently.
“This past week I had the flu, so I was anxious coming in. I was sick all the way until Tuesday. I just drank lots of fluids and made sure to get good rest and eat well. I practiced two times each day this week other than Monday because I was really sick.”
This was Starcher’s second time competing in the indoor state meet. She qualified for state two years ago but missed the podium by one spot.
“This was redemption for my sophomore year,” Starcher laughed.
In outdoor track, Starcher is a three-time state qualifier. She placed sixth her freshman year and fifth her junior year to earn All-Ohio status both seasons.
For her senior year, Starcher has one clear objective.
“It’s all or nothing at this point,” she said. “I want to win outdoor this year. Warren is Division III for the outdoor season this year, and my goal is to come out on top of the podium.”
In the crowd for the indoor meet was Warren track coach Tony Zaleski.
“He really helped me stay positive,” said Starcher, Warren’s only qualifier for the meet. “He came up for the meet and had my back all the way.”
