Etta Express drops 2 to BW
BEREA — Marietta College dropped both ends of an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Fisher Field. The Yellowjackets won game one, 6-4, and then completed the sweep with an 11-2 win in game two. Marietta falls to 8-17 overall and 5-5 in the OAC. Baldwin Wallace improves to 22-8 overall and 9-3 in the OAC.
Ryan Gordon hit a walk-off ground rule double in the bottom of the ninth breaking a 4-4 tie and giving Baldwin Wallace the game one victory. Marietta jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Michael Ciavolella smacked a solo home run in the first. Zack Molloy had an RBI single in the third and Thomson Babineau drove in a run with a sac fly in the fourth.
BW got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from John Panstares. Following a sac fly from Shane Rothlisberger in the sixth giving Marietta a 4-1 lead, the Yellowjackets tied the game in the seventh. Sean Kolencih had an RBI single and Dennis Ritlinger-Nirider tied the game with a two-run home run.
Austin Ziance started on the mound for the Pioneers. He worked 6.2 innings and gave up four runs on nine hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Alex Dues (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing one run in 1.2 innings.
Tyler Walker (3-1) got the win in relief for BW. He worked 2.0 shutout innings giving up no hits and striking out two. Matt Moscarino started and was charged with four runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings.
Ciavolella and Evan King each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.
In the second game, Baldwin Wallace jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back. Colin West capped the victory with a grand slam in the sixth inning extending the BW lead to 11-1.
Diego DeCello got the Pioneers on the board in the third inning with an RBI single to left. Luke Jarzynka hit a solo home run in the seventh accounting for Marietta’s other run.
Luke Czarnomski (1-3) started and got the loss. He gave up four runs on two hits in 1.0 inning. Five other Pioneers pitched in the game.
Brit Kostura (7-2) started and got the win. He allowed two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts in 7.1 innings. Tyler Vogel worked the final 1.2 innings and struck out two.
Caavolella went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Pioneers.
Marietta hosts No. 11 ranked Mount Union on Wednesday. The first game is slated for 4 p.m.
