MC softball dedicates Arbuckle Field

Marietta College softball officially dedicated Jeanne Arbuckle Saturday afternoon after the Pioneers’ 13-5 win over Baldwin Wallace in the first game of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets salvaged a split with a 14-13 victory in game two. Marietta moves to 18-14 on the season and 4-6 in the OAC. Baldwin Wallace is 14-8 overall and 7-5 in the OAC.

The Pioneers scored early and often in game one building an 11-1 lead after three innings. Katie Sweeney drove in the first two runs of the game with a double to right center in the first inning. She would finish the game 5-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI.

Marietta exploded for six runs in the second inning. Becca Streets plated the first run with a sac fly. Adisson Heath drove in a run with a ground out. Sweeney had an RBI single and Jocelyn Grassman delivered a pinch hit, three-run double in her first career at bat.

After Baldwin Wallace got on the board with a run in the top of the third, Marietta answered with three in the bottom of the frame. Street smacked an RBI double to left center and Heath deposited a two-run blast over the fence in center field.

The Yellow Jackets got a solo home run from Lexie Vaillant in the fourth and a three-run blast from Avery Curran in the fifth.

Sweeney collected her fifth hit of the game with bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. Her infield single to short drove in Liz White with the winning run as the Pioneers run-ruled the Yellow Jackets.

Aiyana Hancock (5-4) started in the circle and got the win. She threw 4.0 innings and allowed five runs on five hits. She walked three and struck out five. Kylie Cobb worked the final 2.0 innings allowing two hits.

Katie Barnhart started and took the loss for BW. She was charged with five runs on three hits with four walks and one strikeout in 1.0 inning. Breckyn Daniel allowed five runs on four hits in 1.1 innings and Bailey Licht gave up three runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings of work.

Camryn Campbell, Streets, Heath, and Grace Elliott each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers. Streets, Heath and Grassman had three RBI apiece.

Game two was a wild one as Baldwin Wallace built a 10-0 lead only to see the Pioneers respond with 11 runs to grab the lead. BW tied the game, 11-11, allowed Marietta to retake the lead with two runs in the sixth, and then came from behind again to win the game with three runs in the seventh.

Baldwin Wallace hit four home runs in the game. Sabrina Burke and Avery Curran hit solo shots in the third inning. Curran collected her second home run, a two-run shot, in the fourth. Steph Mraz cleared the center field fence with a solo home run in the fourth.

Marietta got on the board with a solo home run from Sweeney in the bottom of the fourth. White delivered a grand slam in the fifth to start a nine-run rally for the Pioneers. White capped the rally with an RBI single later in the inning.

After BW tied the game in the top of the sixth, Sweeney put the Pioneers back in front with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning. Kenzi Denzer made it 13-11 when she reached on a fielder’s choice that plated Sweeney.

The Yellow Jackets answered right back with three runs in the seventh. Morgan Palos drove in two with a double to right center. A Marietta error led to BW’s third run of the inning. The Pioneers were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh giving the Yellow Jackets the win.

Daniel (7-3) started and got the win. She gave up eight runs on 10 hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Barnhart allowed five runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Camryn Kiefer started for the Pioneers and worked 3.2 innings. Kiefer allowed seven runs on six hits. Cobb (3-4) got the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in 2.2 innings.

White was 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBI. Heath went 3-for-5 with two doubles, while Sweeney was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

Marietta plays at No. 18 Mount Union on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
