Pioneer softball splits doubleheader with Denison
GRANVILLE — Marietta College split a nonconference softball doubleheader at Denison University Tuesday afternoon.
The Pioneers won game one, 6-4, while Denison took the second game, 1-0. Marietta is now 13-9 on the season. Denison moves to 8-12 overall.
The Pioneers held off a late charge by the Big Red in game one. Marietta jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. Adisson Heath drove in Cam Campbell, who reached on an error, with a sac bunt. Becca Streets plated the second run with an infield ground ball.
Marietta scored single runs in each of the fourth through seventh innings, while Denison got on the board with one in the third and three more in the sixth.
Big Red errors led to Marietta’s runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Katie Sweeney launched a solo home run in the sixth, while Emilie Johnson had an RBI single in the seventh.
Denison got a solo homer from Brooke Surbaugh in the bottom of the third. The Big Red tried to rally and got within one run, 6-5, with a three spot in the sixth. Carley Melton and Surbaugh each had RBI singles, while Emerson Seevers plated a run with a sac fly.
Aiyana Hancock (2-2) got the win pitching 5.2 innings. She allowed one run on seven hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Emma Cozza was charged with three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.
Surbaugh (4-6) started and took the loss after allowing five runs, one earned, on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Leah Gershman gave up one run on two hits in 1.0 inning of relief.
Sweeney was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game, while Heath drove in two runs.
Game two was a classic pitchers’ duel with Marietta’s Kylie Cobb going against Denison’s Madilyn Moffitt. The Big Red managed to push a run across in the bottom of the sixth inning to salvage the split.
Liana Su reached base on a two-out double to left. A walk to Rosie Witt and a single to left from Brianna Gonzalez loaded the bases. Leilah Ferrari lined a single into left, scoring Su with the winning run.
Cobb (3-2) went the distance in the circle allowing one run on eight hits. She walked two and struck out two in 7.0 innings of work. Moffitt (4-4) threw the complete game shutout giving up just two hits. She walked two and struck out 10.
Marietta travels to Heidelberg University for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
