DAVIS, W.Va. — Parkersburg South graduate and University of Charleston commit Cameron Fallon left it all on the course during the three-day West Virignia Junior Amateur Championship contested at Canaan Valley Resort, but Washington High School rising senior Tommy Evans defended his title after shooting 1-under par on Thursday en route to a two-stroke victory over Lewisburg’s Isaac Hutchison.

Fallon, who shot 71 on Tuesday, 73 on Wednesday and followed it up with a finishing round of 1-under par 71 on Thursday, ended up four strokes off the pace with a final 215 total.

“I definitely wanted to win,” admitted Fallon, who has to report on Aug. 6 to UC. “I hit the ball well all week and hit it where I wanted to. Didn’t miss a whole lot of fairways. I broke my driver on hole 10 (Tuesday). My shaft snapped.

“One of my buddies let me use his dad’s. I had it for two years. I felt like I definitely lost a couple shots not having it because of some of the longer holes, but other than that I just kept it in play and it all worked out.”

Charleston’s William Johnson was a stroke better and finished third while Wheeling’s Andrew Pennybacker had a total of 216 to round out the top five.

Wahama graduate Grant Roush rallied back from an opening day 78 and finished with rounds of 69 and 70 en route to a 217 total, which put him in a four-way tie for sixth.

“It was really hot, but it was fun getting to play with a bunch of my buddies (Cooper Ward, Roush, Carson Sergent, Justus Mann) that are all going to Charleston together and just competing with them like we’re going to be in the next few years,” Fallon added.

After finishing the front nine at 1-under on Thursday, Fallon had consecutive bogeys to open the back nine, but managed to rebound with a pair of birdies to finish in the red.

“I definitley could’ve lost it today very easily,” admitted Fallon, who said he’s heading for a practice round on Monday at The Club at Cress Creek before trying to qualify on Tuesday for the 92nd West Virginia Open.

“I had two bogeys back-to-back. I could’ve just given up, but I grinded it out and gave it everything. Just really couldn’t get the putter rolling all week.”

The other top efforts from the Mid-Ohio Valley belonged to Waterford’s Reese Lang (28th), Wirt County’s Jude Walker (T32nd), St. Marys’ Tripp Morrison (T39th) and Ripley’s Austin Donohew (T41st).

In the girls championship division, Charleston’s Alexis Green defeated Wheeling’s Ellie West on the first playoff hole as the duo finished with a three-day total of 241.

Locally, Williamstown’s Madilyn Buttrey finished in sixth with a 253 while Wirt County’s Kate Dotson was ninth with a 290.

Starting at $3.70/week.
