After starting slow offensively in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to Beverly/Lowell, Marietta Post 64 set the tone early against New Philadelphia Post 139.
Marietta (15-21) put up a four-spot in the opening inning and kept its foot on the gas from there in a 17-0 win in a Region 4 Tournament elimination game Wednesday at Pioneer Park. Post 64 advanced to play the Zanesville-Cambridge loser at 1 p.m. today.
With the bases loaded and one out in the first, Gavin Fling poked a single up the middle to plate two runs for Marietta's first lead of the tournament. Later, with two on and two out, Drew Warden's popup was dropped, allowing two more runs to cross and make it 4-0.
Fling picked up another run-batted-in in the second when his bases-loaded grounder to 2nd brought in Will Tornes to make it 5-0.
Marietta exploded for nine more runs in the third to turn it into a laugher. After Warden and Logan Fling scored on wild pitches, Will Tornes blasted a two-run home run to make it 9-0. After Warden singled in another run, Logan Fling cleared the bases with a double to stretch the lead to 14-0 as Post 64 sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning.
In the fourth, Logan Fling drove in two more runs on a bases-loaded knock for his fourth and fifth RBIs of the game. He finished 3 for 3. Jacob Sealey doubled twice in four at-bats, Warden was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Gavin Fling plated three runs. Tornes and Braun Doak scored three times apiece.
Justin Graber had two of New Philadelphia's four hits. Seth Beaber pitched two innings to take the loss for Post 139, which finished the season 5-18. New Philadelphia relievers walked six batters.
AJ Copen pitched a five-inning, complete-game shutout. He walked one and struck out one in the winning effort.
