Williamstown’s Buttrey to compete in regional event

WILLIAMSTOWN - With a strong possibility of playing golf at the next level, Williamstown senior Madilyn Buttrey will get a better feel where her game falls in relation to her peers outside the state.
Earlier this week, Buttrey was named as one of eight golfers to represent Team West Virginia in the inaugural Southeast State Team Showcase, Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at Quixote Club in Sumter, S.C.
The Carolinas Golf Association, in conjunction with the United States National Development Program (USNDP) and the USNDP State Junior Teams from North Caroliona, serves as host of the event.
The USNDP Southeast State Team Showcase is expected to become an annual event, celebrating the growth of junior golf throughout the region and highlighting the talent being developed by the participating USNDP State Junior Teams.
"This is definitely a great opportunity to be a part of a new experience against golfers from different places and different experiences. It definitely prepares me for the next level. In college, I will be competing against a wide variety of golfers.
"I'm excited to be going."
The field consists of teams from six states - West Virginia, North Carolia, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. The championship consists of 54 holes over two days, with golfers playing 36 holes on Saturday followed by a final 18-hole round on Sunday.
"I haven't really played any golf in South Carolina - I have played in Florida, but South Caolina will sure be different," Buttrey said. "I did play a tournament in Dayton, Ohio, and golfed 36 holes in one day. Playing 36 holes of competitive golf in one day was a new type of experience. I was definitely exhausted, but I didn't feel as bad as I thought I was going to be."
Teams for the Showcase consists of four male and four female golfers. Joining Buttrey on Team West Virginia are Tommy Evans (Charles Town), Carson Higginbotham (Clarksburg), Isaac Hutchison (Lewisburg), Isaac Hayes (Hurricane), Audrey Kerr (Bridgeport), Alexis Green (Charleston) and Chastyn Viars (South Charleston).
Buttrey learned of her selectionearlier this summer. She had just attended an overnight golf camp with her teammates. Individuals were tested on their skills. They also listened to speakers about the game itself.
"The girls there, I have known forever and played with them all the time," Buttrey said. "I really enjoyed the bunch of tips and the little tests they taught at the clinic. The tests they put us through were really interesting. They are tests I can work on at home."
Buttrey is the defending champion of the Girls State Tournament and capped off her junior year by earning a spot on the all-tournament team at the Class AA State Tournament in Wheeling.
"I did get in a good amount of golf during the summer, but not as much as the previous summer because I went on two vacations this year," Buttrey said. "Hopefully, I have a good high school season."
