WHEELING, W.Va. -- Grady Hesson kicked a 32-yard field goal, threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Clayton Tullius and ran for a 1-yard score in the second half to help Fort Frye rally for a 29-27 win over Wheeling Central Friday.
The Cadets, who improved to 3-0 and play host to rival Waterford next week, trailed 21-13 at halftime against the defending W.Va. Class A state champions, but outscored the Maroon Knights 16-6 over the final two quarters.
Hesson finished with 35 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries while completing 7 of 12 pass attempts for 171 yards and two scores. Tytan Waller caught a 33-yard TD while Tullius finished with 94 yards on three receptions. Gavin Rauch led the FFHS ground attack with 73 yards on 11 carries while Sam Bricker added 58 yards on 10 rushes.
Defensively, Aydric Wynn had an interception for the Cadets.
Central quarterback Nico Kusic ran for 185 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. Dustin Sanner found the end zone once, finishing with 10 rushes for 145 yards.
Athens 38, Marietta 10
THE PLAINS -- A 24-point third quarter turned the tide in Athens' 38-10 win over Marietta Friday night at Joe Burrow Stadium.
The Tigers, who fell to 0-3 with a trip to Watkins Memorial slated for next week, led 10-7 at halftime but watched the Bulldogs (2-1) use a 24-0 run to go up 31-10 at the end of three.
The Tigers got on the board first on Trenton McVey's 10-yard touchdown run with 10:36 left in the second quarter.
With 4:12 to go until halftime, Athens knotted the score on Briar Thomas' 24-yard touchdown pass to Blake Taylor.
Marietta took the lead on the final play of the first half courtesy of Kingston McMahon's 22-yard field goal. A 23-yard pass play from Trenton McVey to Daymeon Gulley moved the ball to the 12 to set up the kick to make it 10-7 at halftime.
Athens got the ball first in the second half and quickly tied the score on Jack Fisher's 25-yard field goal. On their next possession, the Bulldogs took their first lead of the night on Luke Pero's 7-yard touchdown run. That made it 17-10 at the 8:24 mark of the third.
AHS extended its lead on a pair of touchdown passes from Thomas to Cohen Stalder and Taylor, stretching the lead to 31-10 after three.
The Bulldogs put the final touches on the scoreboard with 3:30 remaining when Thomas threw a TD pass to Tyriq Cunningham, his third scoring strike of the contest.
Philo 35, Morgan 6
McCONNELSVILLE -- Casen Foley caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Henry Davisson in the fourth quarter against Philo Friday night, but it was too little, too late as the Electrics cruised to a 35-6 victory.
Audie Buchan threw three touchdown passes -- two Hayden Harper (20 and 31 yards) and one to KJ Philip (25 yards) -- for Philo, which improved to 2-1. Kole Cash ran for a 10-yard score and also recovered a fumble in the end zone for a TD.
Mason Pauley led the Raiders, who dropped to 1-2 and visit West Muskingum next week, with 52 yards on 11 carries.
