Marietta High crew teams ready for regatta Saturday

Marietta High's annual Lindamood Cup will be a USRowing registered regatta this spring.
Before, the longtime, prestigious event on the Muskingum River was not sanctioned but still abided by scholastic racing regulations.
"With the Lindamood a USRowing Registered regatta this year, that means the rules are more formal and we have more referees from out of the area participating," said MHS girls' rowing coach Joe Tewkesbury. "That said, it's also prom weekend which has been moved to an earlier date this year, so finishing the racing at a reasonable time is essential."
All the rowing action is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. at the Harmar Rowing Club on Gilman Avenue in Marietta. The Tiger Navy is the defending Lindamood champion.
The current field will be featuring host Marietta, Parkersburg South, St. Joseph Academy, Shaker Heights (Ohio), Hampton High (Pa.), and Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (Pa.).
"Entries don't close until Wednesday evening, but we have five teams entered so far; I'm expecting another four or five teams," Tewkesbury said.
PHS is expected to be one of those entries.
The MHS boys' crew team will be coached by Kindra Hecker, who is succeeding Tannor O'Connor. Last year, Hecker was a girls' assistant to Tewkesbury.
Right now, Tewkesbury and Hecker have been evaluating their rowers for the shells of the varsity heavyweight eight, varsity lightweight eight, varsity four, varsity lightweight Four, and varsity double.
"I have not announced the lineups to the team yet since we are still evaluating the rowers," Tewkesbury said. "We had a large number of girls out with sickness this week and the river has not been very good with all the rain and debris, so we haven't been able to practice as we normally would have."
The Marietta girls' roster includes Annabel Avenarius, Luna Besaiso, Hailey Blauser, Emma Boothe, Kaitlyn Clovis, Seneca Craven Grace Crosby, Lexi Dalrymple, Cami Felix, Ahni Georgerian, Maddie Hawkins, Audrie Hearing, Riley Hearing, Averi Houck, Katie Kitchen, Ava Lasher, Kya Lindsey, Reagan Loeber, Ariel Metcalf, Sophia Occphibinti, Elly Paintiff, Laura Rauch, Tait Ricks, Carlie Robertson, Lauryn Simpson, Maris Smith, Emma Stubbe, Brooke Taylor, Alicen Teer, Sydney Westbrook, and Abby Westbrook.
Some of the boys to follow will be Jaleel Ismail, Hayden Carman, Alex Perucci, Patrick Elliott, Hunter Danford, Jacob Mahaffey and Jon Mahaffey.
This season has been dedicated to former Tiger rower Tyler Beckett, who took his own life in early January.
Tewkesbury said that he and Hecker have their "fingers crossed that the weather and river are kinder to us than it's been the last couple of weeks."
"We're hopeful that the Muskingum slows down and the junk flowing down diminishes, so that we can get some consistent practices with the lineups we hope to put together and the regatta can be run as we hope," Tewkesbury added.
