CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Behind Trent Valentine’s left arm, the Marietta College Pioneers opened the Division III College World Series with a 7-0 victory over Catholic Friday at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Valentine pitched eight innings of shutout ball, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.
He got plenty of support from the Etta Express offense, as Trent Castle tripled and drove in two runs while Drew Holderbach, Drew Wilkinson and Logan Vietmeier all doubled.
Sam Mathews pitched a clean ninth to secure the win for the Brian Brewer-coached Pioneers, who improved to 44-5 and will play again at 1:15 p.m. CDT/2:15 p.m. EDT Saturday against the winner between Salisbury and Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
