MC softball swept by Muskingum

NEW CONCORD — Muskingum University swept an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Marietta College Wednesday afternoon. The Muskies won game one, 6-5, and then took game two, 9-8 in 10 innings. Marietta is now 14-12 overall and 3-5 in the OAC. Muskingum improves to 20-4 overall and 5-1 in the OAC.

Muskingum used a five-run third inning to build a 6-2 lead in the first game. Emily Rodman capped the rally with a two-run home run. Kasey Timko and Bethany Rodman each had RBI singles in the inning.

Marietta got on the board in the second inning on a double down the left field line from Camryn Campbell that scored Katie Sweeney. Sweeney drove in a run in the third inning.

The Pioneers got within a run with three more in the fifth inning. Grace Elliott got things rolling with a run-scoring single. Sweeney scored later in the inning on a successful first and third double steal. Elliott scored the final run of the rally on a ground our off the bat of Mallory Gorgacz.

Aiyana Hancock (3-3) started in the circle and got the loss. She gave up six runs on eight hits in 2.0 innings of work. Kylie Cobb threw the final 4.0 innings and allowed no runs on just one hit.

Bethany Rodman (9-0) got the win working 5.0 innings and giving up five runs on seven hits. Dani Wright earned a save throwing the final 2.0 innings without allowing a hit.

Sweeney was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game.

Rodman singled to left scoring Olivia Rapol in the bottom of the tenth inning to win game two. Rapol led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Following an out, Rodman delivered the walk-off hit.

Marietta scored five runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take an 8-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh. But Muskingum rallied for five runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Candace Walters (5-4) took the loss in the circle. Walters threw the final 3.0 innings and allowed two runs on two hits. Hancock started and pitched 4.0 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits. Cobb and Emma Cozza threw in relief before Walters took over.

Lillian Fillippinie (2-0) gave up one run on three hits in 4.0 innings of work for the win. Tareyn Born started and pitched 6.0 innings. She allowed seven runs, three earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts.

Liz White went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI for the Pioneers. Campbell finished with three hits, a double, and three runs scored. Adisson heath had two hits, including a double.

Marietta returns home to host Ohio Wesleyan on Thursday. The first game starts at 3 p.m.
