Arab attacker opens fire in central Israel, killing 1 and wounding 5

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — A Palestinian man with Israeli citizenship has opened fire in central Israel, killing a reservist and wounding five other people. The shooter was killed by police on Sunday. The attack came as tensions run high following Israeli settler attacks and the deadly shooting of a Palestinian baby in the West Bank. Police identified the attacker as a resident of Taybeh, but his motives are unclear. Authorities initially feared coordinated attacks but later determined a gunman and an accomplice were involved. The accomplice was arrested after attempting to stab police.

Leo highlighted Spanish popular piety with a procession over flower-petal carpets. The Mass on Sunday took place on the Catholic Corpus Domini feast day that features processions with elaborate floral carpets. Leo arrived Saturday and he aims to inspire young generations in a country where religious observance is declining. The tradition of flower carpets dates back two centuries and is popular in Latin America as well. Leo has encouraged unity and is meeting with cultural leaders during his visit.

The Nigerian army frees 360 abducted people in northeastern Borno state

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — The Nigerian army said Sunday it freed 360 people abducted by Boko Haram in southern Borno, in the northeastern part of the country. The operation, according to the army’s statement, was conducted in the Mandara mountains which form a part of the militant group’s stronghold. It resulted in the release of several people, including children, who had been abducted across different communities in Borno. Two infants died during their prolonged captivity, according to the statement.

Trump dismisses idea that Iran betrays his ‘no new wars’ campaign message

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) — President Donald Trump is dismissing the idea that launching the war with Iran betrayed his refrain of “No new wars” as he campaigned for the White House in 2024. He tells NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he “didn’t guarantee” there would be no wars if elected again. Trump also defended plans for a $1.8 billion fund that would have compensated allies of the Republican president. And in the interview aired Sunday, he repeated his baseless claims of mass fraud in California’s drawn-out vote count from Tuesday’s primary. He ended the interview when he became frustrated with pushback from NBC’s Kristen Welker.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Tony Awards are set to celebrate Broadway’s best, with 24 shows vying for wins across 26 categories. Grammy winner Pink hosts the event, airing live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ on Sunday night. Pink promises a grand opening number and plenty of performances, including from nominees in shows including “The Lost Boys” and “Titanique.” The competition for best new musical includes “Two Strangers” and “Schmigadoon!” while “Death of a Salesman” and “Oedipus” compete for best play revival.
