DeLauter triples twice as Guardians sweep Rockies

DENVER (AP) -- Chase DeLauter had two triples and drove in two runs, Jo Adell had two RBIs and the Cleveland Guardians rolled past the Colorado Rockies 7-2 on Sunday to finish a sweep of their three-game series.

The win was the fourth in a row and sixth in the past eight games for the Guardians, who remain tied with the Texas Rangers for the American League’s third and final wild-card spot.

Foster Griffin (15-4) allowed two earned runs in five innings. It was his fourth start since being traded to Cleveland on Aug. 3, and his first against the Rockies.

Adell has 17 RBIs in his first 17 games with the Guardians since being acquired from the Los Angeles Angels at the trade deadline. With three hits, DeLauter improved his batting average in August to .348.

Adell, Steven Kwan, Angel Martínez and Austin Hedges finished with two hits apiece for Cleveland.

The Rockies’ loss was their sixth in a row, tied for their longest skid of the season, and extended their home losing streak to nine games.

Tomoyuki Sugano (12-7) took the loss after giving up five earned runs and nine hits in just three innings. It was tied for the shortest outing in the majors for the 36-year-old right-hander, who had made it to at least the fifth inning in his previous 22 starts this season.

Up next: Guardians LHP Parker Messick (9-8, 2.54 ERA) and Cleveland will take on RHP George Klassen (2-1, 3.74) and the host Los Angeles Angels on Monday.

RED SOX 5, GIANTS 4

BOSTON (AP) -- Nick Sogard hit his second career homer, Jake Bennett struck out six in seven innings and the Boston Red Sox came back to finish a sweep of the San Francisco Giants with a 5-4 win on Sunday.

The Sox finished their homestand 5-1. They are 7-3 since a five-game skid that matched their season high.

Turner Hill did not start for the Giants Saturday or Sunday with lefties pitching for Boston. Hill started in Friday's loss, doubling off Sonny Gray and finishing 1 for 3. He pinch hit Saturday and drew a walk,

After the Giants took an early 3-0 lead capped by Jonah Cox’s solo homer in the second, Sogard blasted a 3-2 fastball from Matt Wilkinson (0-1) 415 feet over the Green Monster to cut into the deficit.

Ceddanne Rafaela drove in another in the third, and Connor Wong tied the game with an RBI double. Mickey Gasper gave the Red Sox the lead with a double of his own, and Rafaela added an insurance run with a single.

Bennett (8-6) allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and walked one.

The Giants made it a one-run game after Christian Koss hit a true Little League homer, with the Little League World Series ongoing in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

He reached safely on a throwing error by Andruw Monasterio that got past Willson Contreras, rounded second and saw a throw from Wilyer Abreu sail over third base and into a camera well, allowing him to score.

Tyson Guerrero threw a scoreless eighth, and Aroldis Chapman earned his 29th save.

Willy Adames and Victor Bericoto each left the game due to injuries. Adames departed due to a left elbow injury, and Bericoto with a right knee injury, the Giants said.

Up next: The Giants return home to host the Reds on Monday. RHP Chase Burns (14-2, 2.51 ERA) takes the hill for Cincinnati against Giants LHP Carson Whisenhunt (3-4, 7.03).

PHILLIES 6, CARDINALS 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Kyle Schwarber’s MLB-leading 39th homer of the season was a two-run shot with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Philadelphia Phillies rallied from a four-run deficit and beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 on Sunday.

Schwarber’s walk-off blast traveled an estimated 459 feet to center field and punctuated an incredible comeback with six runs in the bottom of the ninth. The win was the Phillies’ ninth straight and gave Philadelphia its third consecutive series sweep.

The Phillies were scoreless through eight innings when Bryce Harper led off the ninth with his second double of the game. Riley O’Brien (3-5), the Cardinals’ fifth reliever, got two quick outs before J.T. Realmuto singled and Justin Crawford worked a walk to load the bases. That brought on utility man Edmundo Sosa, who cleared the bases with a double down the left-field line that cut the lead to 4-3. Bryan De La Cruz’s RBI single scored Sosa, tying the game at 4.

Pitching-short Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol opted to stick with O’Brien and Schwarber ended the game by hitting a 2-2 sinker to deep center.

Phillies reliever Alex McFarlane (3-1) pitched the ninth and earned the victory. Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez allowed four runs over 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts.

Alec Burleson had a pair of RBI singles and Jose Fermin homered as the Cardinals built a 4-0 lead.

St. Louis starter Kyle Leahy seemed well on his way to another winning day after victories in all three of his previous August starts. Leahy has gone 11 consecutive starts allowing two or fewer runs, but with the Cardinals keeping him on a limited pitch count as he transitions from reliever to starter. The 29-year-old right-hander was limited to 63 pitches and left after four innings despite pitching a two-hit shutout with four strikeouts to that point.

YANKEES 8, BLUE JAYS 3

NEW YORK (AP) -- Ben Rice hit a bases-loaded single to score two runs and cap a three-run sixth inning, and the New York Yankees pulled away for an 8-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.

The Yankees knocked out Toronto starter José Soriano (10-7) by opening the sixth with three straight singles, including a bunt by Jazz Chisholm Jr. that loaded the bases. After Braydon Fisher got the first two outs, Trent Grisham took a 3-2 slider that was low and inside for a go-ahead walk.

Rice also reached a full count against left-hander Mason Fluharty and lined a slider to right field for a 5-2 lead.

Chisholm added a two-run homer in the seventh and Grisham homered in the eighth as the Yankees earned a win by at least five runs for the third time since the All-Star break.

Rookie Spencer Jones had an RBI double in the second and also made a diving catch in right field on Alejandro Kirk’s sinking liner in the sixth. Austin Wells added an RBI double in the second as the Yankees won for the sixth time in seven games.

New York finished with double-digit hits for the third time in five games after getting no-hit for 6 2/3 innings on Saturday by Dylan Cease.

New York starter Carlos Rodón allowed two runs - one earned — and two hits in four innings. Still on a pitch count in his second start off the injured list, the left-hander threw 76 pitches, including 12 more after a fielding error by rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. in the fourth on Ernie Clement’s grounder.

Paul Blackburn (5-2) pitched two innings for the win.

Rookie Brett Bateman and Daz Cameron lifted sacrifice flies for Toronto. Kirk added an RBI single in the eighth.

Soriano allowed five runs and seven hits in five-plus innings. The right-hander struck out seven and walked three.

RAYS 3, ORIOLES 1

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Nick Martinez pitched six innings of one-hit ball, Junior Caminero and Chandler Simpson delivered RBI singles in the pivotal sixth inning and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.

The AL East-leading Rays had lost three straight and seven of nine before bouncing back behind Martinez (13-4), who retired 18 of the 19 batters he faced. The only flaw in his brilliant performance was Colton Cowser’s third-inning double down the right-field line.

Cam Booser worked a perfect seventh, Kevin Kelly got three straight outs in the eighth and Bryan Baker gave up a leadoff homer to Cowser in the ninth before sealing his 37th save.

Baltimore finished with three hits and failed to draw a walk for the first time in 122 games.

Martinez and former Tampa Bay starter Shane Baz were locked in a scoreless pitching duel until the sixth, when the Rays went up 3-0 after Baz got two straight outs. Yandy Díaz singled, took third on a single by Jonathan Arana and scored when Baz threw a wild pitch to Caminero.

Caminero then grounded a run-scoring single up the middle. Baz was lifted after walking Liam Hicks, and Simpson greeted Grant Wolfram with a single to center.

Baz (4-14) gave up three runs and five hits. The hard-luck righty is 0-8 in 12 starts since June 12, in part because the Orioles have provided him only 15 runs of support in those dozen outings.

It was a disappointing finish to a 2-4 homestand for Baltimore than began with three straight losses to the Yankees.

The defeat blunted Baltimore’s bid to make some progress in the crowded race for the final AL wild-card spot. The Orioles started the day one game out but tied with the Twins behind three teams.

WHITE SOX 2, METS 1

CHICAGO (AP) -- Tristan Peters homered with one out in the ninth inning to give the Chicago White Sox a 2-1 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday.

After the Mets tied it in the top of the inning, Peters drove a pitch from Kodai Senga (0-9) 406 feet into the center-field seats to seal Chicago’s 11th walk-off victory this season -- and second of the series. It was Peters’ third walk-off hit of the season.

Andrew Benintendi drove in the other run with a double and Chicago’s bullpen allowed one run in seven innings.

Benintendi gave Chicago a 1-0 lead in the eighth with a double that scored Miguel Vargas. Jared Young answered right back in the top of the ninth inning, tying the game with a single.

Despite allowing the tying run, Grant Taylor (6-2) worked a two-hit ninth, fanning two batters for the win. Sean Newcomb, Erick Fedde and Hagen Smith allowed a combined five hits over the first eight innings while striking out eight.

Mets starter Nolan McLean worked six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and picking up six strikeouts.

MARLINS 6, NATIONALS 2

MIAMI (AP) -- Xavier Edwards hit a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning and the Miami Marlins beat the Washington Nationals 6-2 on Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep.

Otto López had two walks and hit a sacrifice fly, while Joe Mack doubled and had two RBI for the Marlins, who are 41-25 at home.

Edwards snapped a 1-all tie when his line drive with the bases loaded scored López and Agustin Ramirez. López drew a two-out walk and Ramirez singled against Washington starter Jackson Kent (0-2). Trevor Williams relieved Kent and walked Heriberto Hernández before Edwards’ single.

Nationals star shortstop CJ Abrams sat out his fourth straight game because of a left ankle sprain.

Michael Petersen (3-3) got the last out in the fifth for the win. Marlins reliever Jack Ralston pitched two scoreless innings in his major league debut.

Jorbit Vivas’s RBI double in the sixth got Washington within 3-2 but Miami responded with Mack’s run-scoring double and López’s sacrifice fly.

Mack made it 6-2 with an RBI fielder’s choice in the eighth.

Heriberto Hernández’s RBI double in the first put Miami ahead 1-0 before Washington tied it on Dylan Crews’ run-scoring double in the fourth.

Nationals center fielder Jacob Young robbed Hernández of another extra base hit in the third, when he scaled the wall and caught his drive.

Making his third career start, Kent gave up three runs and four hits. Marlins starter Janson Junk allowed one run and two hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Before the game, the Marlins honored longtime TV analyst Tommy Hutton, who will retire at the end of the season. The 80-year-old Hutton, who has called Marlins games for 28 seasons, had a 12-year major league playing career with four different clubs. He landed an analyst role with the Montreal Expos shortly after his last game in 1981 and has also called games for the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and ESPN.

RANGERS 5, ANGELS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Ezequiel Durán and Elias Díaz hit solo homers, Cal Quantrill worked six scoreless innings and the Texas Rangers beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-3 on Sunday.

With the win, the Rangers moved into a tie with the Houston Astros for first place in the AL West with records of 65-66.

Durán put Texas on the board early, launching his 14th home run of the year into the left-center seats for a 1-0 lead. Cody Freeman added an RBI triple -- his first of the season -- before Díaz extended the lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning with a solo homer, his sixth of the season.

Quantrill (6-4) allowed six hits, didn’t allow a walk and struck out six. He now boasts five-straight starts of five or more innings allowing a run or less, and extended his scoreless innings streak to 15.

Jacob Latz worked a one-hit ninth for his 26th save of the season.

Zach Neto started an eighth-inning rally for the Angels with a homer. Josh Lowe hit a sacrifice fly, and Gustavo Campero added an RBI single, but that was all the offense the Angels mustered.

Yusei Kikuchi (0-4) allowed all five runs on seven hits. He struck out four in five innings for Los Angeles.

ROYALS 11, TIGERS 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Nick Loftin and John Rave homered, Kyle Isbel drove in three runs and the Kansas City Royals extended their winning streak to eight games with an 11-7 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

The Royals’ winning streak is their longest since May 2024. Kansas City has won seven straight at home, only the fourth time in franchise history the team has completed an undefeated homestand of seven or more games.

Isbel drove in the first runs of the game with a two-run single, and Loftin added a three-run shot over the left-center field wall, putting Kansas City up 5-1.

Vinnie Pasquantino and Salvador Perez added RBI doubles in the fifth before Rave extended the Royals’ lead to 9-5 with a two-run shot to right field.

Isbel and Loftin added RBI singles in the eighth to cap the scoring as the Royals completed the three-game sweep.

John Schreiber (1-3) worked two-thirds of an inning in the fifth and earned his first win of the season. Daniel Lynch IV pitched 4 1/3 innings of two-run ball, allowing four hits and striking out two. Steven Cruz worked a hitless ninth.

Kevin McGonigle had an RBI double and a game-tying home run for the Tigers. Gleyber Torres and Max Clark had run-scoring groundouts, Hao-Yu Lee added an RBI single and Ben Malgeri walked with the bases loaded in the seventh.

Andrew Sears (0-1) made his MLB debut for Detroit and allowed five runs on six hits in four innings.

Kansas City right fielder Jac Caglianone was scratched from the lineup due to ankle soreness.

ATHLETICS 7, ASTROS 6

HOUSTON (AP) -- Max Muncy hit a go-ahead solo homer in the seventh inning and the Athletics rallied from a six-run deficit to beat the Houston Astros 7-6 on Sunday.

Brian Serven hit a three-run shot, his fourth, that began the six-run rally in the fifth inning. Lawrence Butler had an RBI double, and Tommy White drove in two to even the score 6-6.

Muncy then drove a fastball from Steven Okert (6-2) to center to give the A’s the lead for good.

Jack Perkins (3-9) threw five innings of relief, striking out six while allowing three runs on three hits. He walked five, including two intentional walks of Yordan Alvarez.

Alvarez, currently in the hunt for just the second Triple Crown this century, fouled a ball off of his foot in the fourth, but remained in the game.

He passed Jeff Bagwell’s franchise record with his 28th intentional walk of the season in the eighth, and his third intentional walk of the game also tied a franchise record.

The Astros scored three in the first, one in the second, and two more in the fourth to take what seemed to be a commanding 6-0 lead. Jose Altuve hit his 14th home run in the first, a two-run shot to left-center, and Isaac Paredes drove a homer of his own to left in the fourth.

Hogan Harris locked down the ninth for his 13th save.

Astros manager Joe Espada was away from the squad Sunday due to a family emergency, per the team. Bench coach Omar López managed in his absence.
