Hileman "Bucky" Stewart, 83 of Newark, WV died Sunday morning, Aug 16 at home, with problems of cancer. He is preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Kuhl of Glenville. Together they raised 3 children Caena of Newark, Casey and Cody of Fairmont and have 6 grandchildren.
Bucky was born in Sistersville to Charles and Gladys Stewart.
After a stellar athletic career at Sistersville High School, he graduated in 1961.
Ted Underwood recruited Bucky to go to Salem College to play football on a scholarship where he was the team's fullback, linebacker and punter for four years. He graduated from Salem in 1965 with degrees in health, physical education and driver's education. He did his student teaching at Doddridge County High Schooll and there had his first coaching stint.
Bucky returned to Sistersville High School to teach and coach football in the fall of 1965, under then Head coach Dale Evans. After that he had coaching duties at Parkersburg Catholic (twice), Shadyside, Ohio, Preston Co, Woodford County in Kentucky for 8 years, Braxton, Calhoun, Wirt and Gilmer counties.
Bucky was a powerful man and tremendous athlete, reportedly swimming the Ohio River twice, playing football for the Wheeling Ironmen (semi-pro team), excellent deer hunter and musky fisherman.
Bucky was proud of his own children and grandchildren and all the young athletes and coaches he came in contact. He was chosen to be one of the coaches of the BACF game as well as the West Viurginia High School North-South All-Star game.
He leaves behind a memorable career as teacher and coach, and his legacy will live on with the Stewart family and the many players he coached and mentored.
