Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate primary in major victory for Democrats’ progressive wing
DETROIT (AP) -- Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in a victory for the party’s progressive wing in a battleground state. El-Sayed narrowly defeated U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens and will face Republican Mike Rogers in November. The seat is pivotal to Democrats’ chances of flipping the Senate and El-Sayed will face the challenge of uniting a divided Democratic base after a bruising primary. El-Sayed, a former health official, campaigned on “Medicare for All,” halting military aid to Israel and campaign finance reform. He had support from progressive leaders including Sen. Bernie Sanders and U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Russian barrage in Ukraine’s capital region kills 17 as air defenses fall short
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) -- Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and its region have killed 17 people and wounded 44 others. The attacks are part of a series of large-scale strikes exploiting Ukraine’s shortage of interceptor missiles. Zelenskyy has urged other countries to send more ammunition to bolster its depleted air defenses. Meanwhile, Ukraine has increased its drone attacks on key Russian targets to pressure President Vladimir Putin into negotiations. The Russian Defense Ministry claims its strikes targeted war-related sites, while Ukraine says civilian areas were hit. The ongoing conflict has intensified, affecting both military and civilian infrastructure.
No evidence? No problem. Trump pushes ahead on false claims that Reflecting Pool was vandalized
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Jeanine Pirro this week found out there’s a tradeoff between loyalty to President Donald Trump and being loyal to reality. The U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia has been a fierce defender and decades-long friend to Trump. But she openly refuted his claims the damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was due to vandalism -- instead of shoddy workmanship. The moment comes as Trump is struggling to convince Americans to believe what’s he’s telling them on the economy, his agenda and his war on Iran. Trump has rebuked Pirro, and has been non-committal about her future in his administration.
State of New Mexico sues Justice Department and Todd Blanche, saying they blocked its Epstein probe
CEDAR CREST, N.M. (AP) -- The state of New Mexico has sued the Department of Justice and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, saying the federal government has blocked it from carrying out its own investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s sex crimes. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Washington on Wednesday. The lawsuit said the Justice Department and Blanche had actively harmed victims and undermined public interest by failing to provide information to the state’s investigators. It said New Mexico was one of the few jurisdictions that could still bring criminal charges related to Epstein’s crimes. The Justice Department said it was withholding some information from New Mexico to protect the privacy of victims and conform with federal court rulings.

Scientists are certain a wayward SpaceX rocket slammed into the moon as predicted
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) -- Scientists say they’re certain that a SpaceX rocket has slammed into the moon as predicted. While no one observed the actual impact, a telescope in Chile spotted what astronomers have identified as the debris plume resulting from the high-speed crash. The leftover rocket segment plowed into the moon Wednesday after drifting off course for the past year. SpaceX launched the rocket last year with a pair of lunar landers. The company says a combination of solar activity and gravity accidentally put it on a collision course with the moon. SpaceX is working with NASA to avoid any further lunar littering.
