Icelandic voters reject a proposal to restart negotiations to join the European Union
REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) -- Iceland’s voters have rejected a referendum to restart negotiations to join the European Union. RÚV, the national broadcaster, said opponents defeated the measure by a margin of 52.8% to 47.2%. The result will put the issue to rest for the second time about a decade after a euroskeptic government ended EU talks. The referendum was held amid concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats toward neighboring Greenland, prompting some voters to consider European solidarity. Opponents cited fishing rights and existing benefits from the EU’s single market, while supporters argued for economic stability and closer ties with Europe.
US coaches Polish forces in a drone-focused drill based on lessons from Ukraine
HOHENFELS, Germany (AP) -- Members of the Polish special forces are taking part in an exercise that simulates moving through enemy lines and launching a drone strike on a key enemy location. Initially designed by the Army’s Green Berets for U.S. special forces, the exercise that began Friday simulates many of the challenges that Ukrainian troops have experienced in their conflict with Russia. It’s the first time a NATO ally like Poland has undertaken the training and The Associated Press received rare access to it. It comes at a time when tensions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and NATO countries have escalated.
NASA’s newest space telescope launches on a quest to explore the hidden universe
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) -- NASA’s newest space telescope has blasted off on a quest to find planets around other stars and explore the hidden universe. SpaceX launched the $4 billion Roman Space Telescope on Sunday from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center. Roman blazed toward an observation point 1 million miles away that’s home to the Webb Space Telescope, one of NASA’s other crown jewels in the sky. Roman will take three months to reach its destination. Once there, it will survey the cosmos like never before. The telescope is named after the late Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief astronomer.

Ontario premier answers Trump’s ‘Lake America’ with giant ‘Lake Ontario’ sign
TORONTO (AP) -- Ontario Premier Doug Ford has responded to President Trump’s “Lake America” decree with a billboard declaring “Lake Ontario. Now and Always.” Ford unveiled the sign near Grimsby, Ontario, wearing a Team Canada soccer jersey. The display follows Trump’s order for U.S. agencies to call Lake Ontario “Lake America.” Canadian leaders have met the move with ridicule. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew compared Trump to an aging rock band trying to revive an old hit. Canadian historian Robert Bothwell criticized the move, arguing Trump’s broader aim is to subordinate Canada. The dispute comes amid worsening trade relations between the allies.
Tropical Storm Karina strengthens into a hurricane in the Pacific, could be a major storm this week
MIAMI (AP) -- Tropical Storm Karina has strengthened into a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean. The National Hurricane Center says it could become a major storm this week. On Sunday, Karina was far out at sea and not threatening land. It had maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour, making it a Category 1 hurricane. The storm was about 820 miles southwest of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. It was moving northwest at 15 miles per hour. While Karina is expected to stay away from land, it could cause dangerous surf and rip currents along parts of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula.
At least 8 dead after ferry with nearly 270 passengers and crew capsizes off Cyprus’ northern coast
BODRUM, Turkey (AP) -- At least eight people have died after a ferry carrying nearly 270 passengers and crew capsized off the coast of the breakaway north of ethnically divided Cyprus. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offered his condolences and said his government was coordinating with Northern Cyprus.
Moulton says Sen. Markey, 80, is too old for another term. Young Massachusetts Democrats are divided
BOSTON (AP) -- Young Massachusetts voters agree that 80-year-old U.S. Sen. Ed Markey stumbled when asked during a debate how he uses artificial intelligence. They disagree about what the moment says about his ability to represent their generation. Democratic challenger Seth Moulton has made Markey’s age and a call for “generational change” central to his campaign for Tuesday’s primary. Some young Moulton supporters say the exchange showed why a new generation of leaders is needed to confront rapidly changing technology and economic challenges. But young Markey supporters say his decades-long record on climate, technology and other progressive priorities matters more than his age.
