Trump asked China’s president if he wanted to buy US arms, ambassador says

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The State Department is looking to distance President Donald Trump’s administration from comments made by U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue, who says Trump asked Chinese President Xi Jinping if he wanted to buy weapons from the United States. Perdue made the statement on Fox News Channel’s “Fox News Sunday” while discussing U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. Perdue says the Republican U.S. president asked Xi if he’d “like to buy some.” But the State Department on Monday said “U.S. law prohibits arms sales to China and there is no offer or plan to sell arms to China.” China says it’s committed to maintaining world peace and stability.

5 men arrested near a US-run air base are bailed as UK police probe whether there’s a link to Iran

FAIRFORD, England (AP) -- British police say that five men arrested under counterterrorism laws near a U.S.-run air base in England will be released on bail but are still under investigation. The head of U.K. Counter Terrorism Policing said Monday that the men face stringent conditions and “absolutely remain under investigation as we explore multiple lines of inquiry.” Investigators haven’t concluded whether the incident was state-backed. They are investigating a possible link to Iran, Russia or non-state-backed militant groups. RAF Fairford is home to long-range U.S. bombers that have been used in the Iran conflict and has also been the focus of protests by anti-war campaigners.

Tropical Storm Hanna forms in the Atlantic Ocean and isn’t threatening land

MIAMI (AP) -- Forecasters say Tropical Storm Hanna has formed in the Atlantic Ocean and isn’t threatening land. The storm on Monday was located about 870 miles east-northeast of Bermuda and was moving east. The Miami-based National Hurricane Center says maximum sustained winds were around 45 mph. There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Little change in strength is forecast in the coming days. The storm comes as the Atlantic hurricane season has been unusually quiet this year due to a strong El Niño, which disrupts storm formation over that ocean. Storm activity in the Pacific has been above average.

Hurricane Polo could cause life-threatening flooding in Mexico’s Baja California peninsula

PUERTO SAN CARLOS, Mexico (AP) -- Residents of Mexico’s Baja California Sur state are preparing for Hurricane Polo, which threatens high winds, floods, and mudslides. On Monday, people in Puerto San Carlos feared high tides and waves could breach barriers. Some families planned to head to shelters in Ciudad Constitucion. Polo is a Category 3 storm with top sustained winds of 115 mph. It is expected to hit the Mexican mainland after affecting Baja California Sur. Meanwhile, Hurricane Nolo could still bring torrential rain to parts of Hawaii. The Pacific has seen above-average storm activity this season, consistent with El Niño years.

A New York prosecutor has reopened an investigation into gang rape allegations at a Cornell University fraternity in response to a lawsuit. The complaint was filed by a woman who says she was sexually assaulted in 2024 by seven students after being plied with alcohol and drugs. Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said Monday that his office will present evidence to a grand jury as he faces questions from the public about why there were no criminal prosecutions in the case. The woman filed the complaint Sept. 16, saying she was sexually assaulted at the Chi Phi fraternity house.

Nvidia unveils security platform to stop AI agents from going rogue after new, troubling incidents

Nvidia has unveiled a new security platform designed to prevent AI agents from going rogue. The Open Agent Safety Platform includes software that sets boundaries for AI agents. This comes after revelations of AI models escaping and breaking into other organizations. Nvidia executives say the system could have prevented a recent incident where OpenAI agents hacked into AI startup Hugging Face. Similar breaches have involved OpenAI’s models and other companies like Anthropic and Meta. Nvidia’s open-source software, OpenShell, lets developers verify an agent’s authority. A separate security layer, Sentry, monitors and contains suspicious behavior. Over 100 companies are already using the system.
