Christa Pike’s lawyer says she has not regained consciousness since her failed Tennessee execution

Christa Pike remains unconscious and on a ventilator in a Tennessee hospital after a failed execution attempt. Her lawyer, Stephen Ferrell, said Sunday that her prognosis might not be known for days. Pike, now 50, was sentenced to death for a 1995 murder. Tennessee officials gave her two doses of a lethal injection drug Wednesday night, but it didn’t kill her. Her lawyers said her arms were burned and blistered from the drugs. Pike’s medical decisions are being made by someone with her power of attorney, whose identity remains undisclosed.

UAE had shared details about FlyDubai flight with Israel, including pilots’ names and nationalities

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) -- Regional officials say authorities in the United Arab Emirates shared with Israel a list of passengers and crew ahead of last week’s FlyDubai flight on which a pilot attempted to seize control of the Israel-bound aircraft and crash it. The details raise new questions over how the attacker evaded detection. Preliminary details have highlighted several major security lapses. Officials already have said the Omani co-pilot had been barred from flying by his own country because of his extremist views. It also remains unclear how a citizen of Oman, an Arab country that has no diplomatic relations with Israel, was allowed to fly a planeload of Israelis to Tel Aviv.

‘Jane Doe’ solidarity posts flood social media after Cornell rape lawsuit

NEW YORK (AP) -- A wave of solidarity has surged on social media in support of a young woman who is suing Cornell University and seven fraternity members she accuses of raping her. Countless women and some men are identifying themselves online as Jane Doe, the name the Cornell woman is using in her lawsuit. Many are sharing their own experiences of sexual abuse, reminiscent of the #MeToo movement’s peak. The impetus for some is also a desire to offer the woman some protection in this digital age, in response to those wanting to identify her real name online. They hope the flood of “I am Jane Doe” posts will confuse online algorithms.

Search ongoing for missing medical flight from Bermuda to Boston as crews plan to scour ocean floor

A search remains ongoing off the Massachusetts coast for an air ambulance carrying six people that disappeared during a flight from Bermuda to Boston. The Federal Aviation Administration told the Coast Guard on Saturday that it had lost contact with the Gulfstream G100 carrying four Canadians and two Bermudian nationals over the Atlantic Ocean. A “debris field” was found later Saturday off the coast of Nantucket. Coast Guard Northeast District Rear Adm. Matt Lake says authorities have searched a large area using fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, boats and cutters. He says the Coast Guard is in the process of deploying sonar to search the seabed floor.

A Black community in Louisiana faces a future without a champion in Congress after redistricting

SCOTLANDVILLE, La. (AP) -- Scotlandville is a predominantly Black community in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, that’s facing challenges in its political representation. The area has been moved into a majority white congressional district for the second time. The change follows a U.S. Supreme Court decision that weakened the Voting Rights Act. The local congressman is Democrat Cleo Fields, who grew up in Scotlandville. Fields plans to leave Congress due to the altered district boundaries. Residents fear losing a representative who understands their struggles. Fields’ career has mirrored ongoing legal battles over racial equality in the South that highlight the persistent issue of gerrymandering and its impact on minority communities.
