Bohm homers in 10th, Phillies force decisive Game 3

ATLANTA (AP) — Alec Bohm put Philadelphia ahead with a two-out home run in the 10th inning and the Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3 on Wednesday to force a decisive third game in their National League Wild Card Series. The Phillies rallied with back-to-back homers from Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper after trailing 3-1 in the seventh. Harper's homer made up for a crucial fielding mistake an inning earlier. Andrew Painter (1-0), a starter in the regular season, saved the Phillies' beleaguered bullpen with three scoreless innings to close things out. Painter stranded two runners ...

High gas prices are spurring states to waive taxes and regulations amid midterm election

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — State officials nationwide are focusing on rising gas and diesel prices tied to the war in Iran, offering gas tax holidays and other measures to ease costs as affordability remains a top voter concern in the critical midterm elections. The high gas prices took center stage in Ohio on Wednesday, as lawmakers passed a 90-day state gas tax holiday with broad bipartisan support. Including Ohio, about one-third of U.S. states have implemented some form of fuel tax relief, with many taking action within the past week, according to an Associated Press review. Some ...

Toward a post-Trump politics

From the clutter of midterm election poll results, it's possible sometimes to see new patterns of political support emerging. The overall pattern, as it stands, makes some sense. As in the 2006 and 2018 off-year cycles, the Republican president's job approval had sagged to well below 50%. Polls at this point in the year showed Democrats competitive in states and districts that the president had carried by solid margins two years before. Democrats ended up gaining 30 House seats in 2006 and 41 in 2018, ousting Republican speakers and, in both elections, installing Rep. Nancy Pelosi ...

Mitch McConnell got the healthcare he needed. Charles Booker wants that for everyone.

Last week, America watched as Sen. Mitch McConnell was wheeled onto the Senate floor after being absent for nearly three months following his June 14 hospitalization. Whether or not McConnell is fit to do his job is debatable. What isn't debatable is that he had access to excellent healthcare when he needed it without having to worry about whether he could afford it, whether his insurance would cover it or how he would pay the premiums. That's not a luxury most Americans have. The day before McConnell reported back to work, I sat down with the man who hopes to replace him. Former ...
