Ready for roof work: Marietta BOE accepts bid for $908K project

Marietta City Schools accepted a bid from Saup/Hartley Roofing totaling $908,001 for the district-wide roofing project during a Tuesday afternoon special session.
Board president Sam Tuten was absent, which prompted Vice President Cody Parman to call the meeting to order.
The board had hired Sixmo Architects to oversee the roof placement project at Marietta IT Office, 242 N. Seventh Street, Board of Education Building at 111 Academy Drive, Putnam Elementary at 598 Masonic Park Road, and the district bus garage at 400 Millcreek Road.
After talking with Sixmo, they recommended Saup/Hartley Roofing out of Zanesville.
Board member Eric Reed said he had previously expressed concerns about the roofing project.
"I'm not in love with this project. I do have concerns about where we're at in the next couple of years. But moving forward, I understand it's the right thing to do," he said.
Treasurer Frank Antil said the board reviewed the bids last week with Sixmo and Saup/Hartley Roofing was the recommended provider.
While reviewing the high school Parent-Student Handbook, Superintendent Brad Silvus said that an amendment to the cell phone policy may be needed due to legislation signed by Gov. Mike Dewine.
"You got some other sample policies from some local districts of what they're looking at as well and meet with administrators this week to kind of talk about the impact of that as well," he said.
According to the Ohio Department of Education's model policy, student cell phone usage is prohibited during school hours except if they are on a Individualized Education Program (IEP) or for monitoring a health concern. The policy was written after the passage of House Bill 250, requiring every school district in Ohio to adopt a policy that governs cell phone usage. Schools are required to adopt a policy by July 2025, ahead of the 2025-2026 school year.
The board unanimously passed the Parent-Student Handbook for both of the high school and elementary school.
