DEERWALK – One person was killed Wednesday and two others injured in an accident involving a trailer carrying lumber and a pickup truck.

The crash happened around 12:15 p.m. on U.S. 50 near Progress Ridge Road. The Wood County Sheriff’s Office had not issued a release or report on the crash as of 6:15 p.m.

At the scene, a damaged cab and tractor trailer rig lay upside down off to the side of the westbound lane with numerous pieces of lumber scattered in the road.

A blue pickup truck was further west near the intersection with Progress Ridge Road, its bed separated and resting on the other side of the eastbound lane.

One person was placed in an ambulance at the scene and another transported by a medical helicopter that landed in the westbound lanes.

First responders covered the open driver’s side door of the pickup with a sheet and tarp. A Wood County 911 Center supervisor confirmed one person was killed in the accident.

The names of those involved had not been released by the sheriff’s office by deadline.

The sheriff’s office was joined at the scene by the West Virginia State Police, Deerwalk Volunteer Fire Department, WVU Medicine Camden Clark Ambulance Service and others.

Initially, traffic was still moving east as vehicles backed up in the westbound lane. They started turning around, and eastbound traffic was eventually stopped as tow trucks made their way to the area and the medical helicopter landed.

One westbound lane had reopened around 2:45 p.m., according to a post on the sheriff’s department’s Facebook page.
