From staff reports
The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley in Marietta is going to be one of 24 shelters in the U.S. to receive a $10,000 grant as part of the Petfinder 20th anniversary.
"We are shocked and thrilled to death," said Kelly Goedel, executive director for the HSOV. "Really, I can't put into words how thankful we are. I mean we are thrilled to death."
Petfinder is a leading resource for pet adoption. Since August this year, it has asked people across the country to help them earn $200,000 to have the ability to award a grant to shelters in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, South Carolina, Washington, Ohio and even Canada.
Goedel said she doesn't know the specifics of the grant and how it can be used yet.
"We always need building improvements and a new humane officer vehicle," she said. "The needs are really never-ending and this is so unexpected to be awarded this money from a selection across the country."
Goedel said once she knows what the grant is for, she can't wait to begin the planning for how the shelter will utilize it.
The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley is always accepting donations and has a wishlist of wanted items on its website. For those who wish to get involved, there is a volunteer orientation every Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information, visit hsov.org or call 740-373-5959.
