YOUNGSTOWN -- Erica Hays of Newport is one of more than 1,200 Youngstown State University students awarded first-year Scholarships of Excellence this fall.
A Frontier High School graduate who is studying Dance Management at YSU, Hays was awarded a Deans' Scholarship.
The Scholarships for Excellence award totals are: $1,000 First Opportunity; $2,000 Red and White; $3,000 Dean's; $4,000 President's; $5,000 Trustees'; $4,000 to $6,000 Provost; $1,000 Martin Luther King; $1,000 to $3,000 Honors Program; and $2,000 Trailblazer.
Muskingum University
NEW CONCORD -- Bernard Johnson of Marietta and Hope Worstell of Caldwell have been selected to serve as Resident Assistants at Muskingum University in New Concord.
Resident Assistants (RAs) are specifically trained sophomores, juniors and seniors who live on each floor/section of a residence hall. They assist individual students with personal, academic and social concerns, and help develop a sense of community among residents.

FINDLAY -- The University of Findlay recently welcomed new undergraduate and graduate students to campus for fall 2017.

Cylus Reynolds of Marietta is pursuing a doctor of pharmacy degree and a degree in business management. Reynolds is a graduate of Waterford High School.
Emilee Bradley of Marietta is pursuing a degree in psychology and a degree in health science. Bradley is a graduate of Parkersburg Catholic High School.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Erica Hays of Newport is one of more than 400 Youngstown State University freshmen awarded Honors, Provost and Housing scholarships to start the fall semester.
Hays, a Frontier High School graduate and Dance Management major at YSU, was awarded the Honors Program Scholarship and Honors Housing Scholarship.
Honors Scholarships and Honors Housing Scholarships both range from $2,000 to $3,000, and recipients become part of YSU's prestigious University Honors College. Provost Scholarships range from $4,000 to $6,000 and recognize high-achieving out-of-state students.
Housing awards, including the Housing Experience Scholarship, the Housing Excellence Scholarship and the President's Residential Scholarship, range from $2,000 to $5,550.

Student Senate strives to serve as a medium for expressing student opinion and works to promote the campus community. Student Senate represents the student body to the Ashland University Board of Trustees, the president and other campus administration. Members of the Student Senate actively serve on numerous institutional and Faculty Senate planning committees. Membership on Ashland University's Student Senate is open to full-time students at the University. Students must be elected by the student body and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5.

The Philosophy Club at Ashland University provides students with the opportunity to discuss various philosophical concepts and ideas. It is an open forum in which members can examine their current belief systems and evaluate them with those of their peers. Guest speakers also are invited at various points during the year to lecture on current affairs, such as political ethics and religious issues.

ALLIANCE -- Hayden Carman of Marietta joined Greek life at the University of Mount Union. Carman became a new member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Sigma Alpha Epsilon's mission is to promote the highest standards of friendship, scholarship and service for its members upon the ideals set forth by their founders.
The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi
BATON ROUGE, LA -- Local residents recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.
Stephanie Engle of Marietta was initiated at The Ohio State University.
Amy Willis of Parkersburg was initiated at Marshall University.
These residents are among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the Society has chapters on more than 300 campuses in the United States and the Philippines. Its mission is "To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others."
