Council renames Lookout Park
Marietta City Council passed legislation by unanimous vote Thursday renaming Lookout Park on Harmar Hill in honor of Gold Star families.
The moniker includes any relative who has sacrificed a loved one in the U.S. Armed Forces and will now be the title of the park: Gold Star Park. The Sgt. Bob O’Malley Detachment #1436 of the Marine Corps League and Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation are still currently fundraising for the $50,000 project to erect a Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in the park with hopes to have the marble monument in place next spring.
Council also passed legislation Thursday with the intent to advertise for lease property just north of the Marietta Rowing Club’s boathouse on the Muskingum River.
Councilman Roger Kalter, D, 1st ward, said the lease specifies that a bidder for the land measuring 184.32 feet in length along the Muskingum River and narrowing from 36 feet to 25 feet in width, must be an educational organization.
“This allows for the administration to advertise for bids,” Kalter explained. “And limit it to the crew teams is the idea.”
Previously council had discussed in committee the intent of the Harmar Rowing Club to lease the land to extend the high school boat docks further north along the western shore of the Muskingum.
The minimum bid for the property’s lease is set at $415 per year and all bids will be due 11 a.m. to Safety-Service Director Jonathan Hupp on Dec. 15. Hupp said he then plans to recommend awarding a bid to council prior to Dec. 31.
“I think that this is a great use of the riverbank on the west side,” said Councilman Tom Vukovic, D, 4th ward. “This is going to a group that will encourage public participation and I hope future councils will continue to ensure the public has access to that riverbank.”
