6-business Cash Mob Dec. 16

It might have been the last, first Monday of the year, but the Cash Mob will rise once again before 2018.

A group of about 10 people toured two shops Monday night as part of Marietta Main Street’s Cash Mob event, but before they left the corner of Butler and Front streets – after participating in a trivia contest about the two businesses on the itinerary, A Unique Flower & Gift Shop and Twisted Sisters boutique – Cash Mob coordinator Charlie Clay told the gathering about Mega Cash Mob.

The six-business tour will be held on a Saturday, Dec. 16, starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. The self-guided event allows participants to visit the businesses at a leisurely pace and take in lunch downtown if they like, Clay said. A ticket handed out at the start and stamped by each of the six businesses will make the participants eligible to enter a drawing for a massive gift basket of items from downtown Marietta businesses, he said.

At A Unique Flower & Gift Shop, Andy and Rita Molvie said they found a perfect gift for one of their favorite musicians: a stuffed toy that played a saxophone version of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” They’ll give it to the sax player in the Drew Allen duo when he comes to the Marietta Wine Cellar next, Rita said.

It was Meredith Becker’s first Cash Mob experience, and she left the shop with a wreath and a signpost directing the reader to ski slopes, sledding areas and a skating pond.

“I’ve got an old pair of ice skates and I needed something to go with them,” she said. “I’m not sure how this will go together, but I’ll work it out.”

Cheryl Lang, proprietor of A Unique Flower & Gift Shop, said she appreciates the Marietta Main Street efforts.

“They do a nice job of getting people involved,” she said.

The Cash Mob participants pledge to spend at least $10 in each store.

Lang described the holiday trade as “not bad” this year.

“It seems to be a little better than last year, so we should count our blessings,” she said.

Clay said after the Mega Cash Mob event, the program will have featured 32 downtown businesses this year.
