BEVERLY – Several Fort Frye high school students have embraced the district’s internship program, which has enabled them to work and get school credit.
Teacher Stephanie Marshall told the Fort Frye Local Schools board of education at its regular meeting Tuesday night that, following a one-year pilot program, this year the schools have 13 students in internships, getting course credits for jobs they already had.
“We had only two students in internships in the pilot program last year,” she said and explained that requirements are rigid for the students but rewarding.
“They have to fill out an agreement with the employer and the parents, the teacher signs it and they agree to do specific hours at a job,” she said. “They have to turn in log sheets every two weeks, and there are at least four evaluations from the employer.”
Superintendent Stephanie Starcher said off-campus privileges make the program possible. Students can earn a course credit for 60 hours of work or two credits for 120 hours.
Senior Maya Sauls told the board the program worked perfectly for her – she already has two jobs.
“I work at Joe Momma’s Kitchen and the Glenwood retirement home,” she said. “I love it. I like to work and have money.”
Marshall said employers of students also include Dynergy and locally owned landscaping firms.
Marshall also outlined the Seniors in the Job Market program for the board, explaining that the one-semester course it is a requirement for graduation.
“We do everything in the first semester, and it’s all done in Google Classroom,” she said.
That means students can deal with the course materials whenever time allows, going through nine assignments that range from matching careers to degrees to completing job applications, resumes, cover letters and interviews. Many of the students use school-provided Chromebooks to complete the online and digital document work, she said.
In other business, the board:
≤ Approved a total of $44,072 in supplemental contracts with 21 athletic coaches, assistants and supervisors, of whom two are volunteers, for the 2018-19 school year.
≤ Approved the hiring of a paraprofessional aide for two special needs students at Ewing School for the remainder of this school year.
≤ Approved the hiring of a new CTE vocational ag teacher for the 2018-19 school year.
≤ Accepted the contribution of nine HP Chromebooks, 14 G4 Chromebooks and nine Chrome management licenses for Salem-Liberty Elementary School from Donors Choose valued at $2,379.51.
The board also held a closed executive session at the end of the meeting to discuss security arrangements and emergency response protocols.
