Washington State Community College May Students of the Month

3 min read

Washington State Community College (WSCC) announces the May Students of the Month. This program was created to recognize those students who strive for success by overcoming obstacles and committing to complete their education. In honor of the 2016 graduating class, WSCC has decided to honor the three graduation student speakers to receive this recognition.

These students were selected based on their grade point average, as they were required to have a minimum of 3.7. It was also necessary to submit an outline of the speech they wanted to present to their graduating class. The selection committee took both items under advisement in making their selection.

“Our Honor Student speakers have worked very hard to achieve excellent grades, and they have also excelled as leaders in student organizations,” said Mark Nutter, WSCC vice president for academic affairs. “We are proud to have them speak on behalf of the 2016 graduates,” he continued.

Jeannette Jaraucaro, an Office Administrative Services Technology graduate, addressed the Business ceremony; Ashton Amos, a General Science Transfer and Liberal Arts major, spoke at the Arts and Science graduation; and Laura Langley, who graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement, spoke at the ceremony for Public Service.

All three honorees are leaving behind their WSCC experience with an abundance of excitement and determination that they plan to utilize to inspire their fellow classmates in their speeches. Langley said her theme is “Never Give Up On Your Dreams.”

“We were able to overcome our obstacles and obtain our goal,” she explained. “We will be able to hold our heads high because we did something great. We did not quit. We did not give in.”

Following graduation Langley plans to pursue a career in the criminal justice system and will continue to perform chemical dependency assessments through the court system to assist in offender rehabilitation.

Jaraucaro expressed her satisfaction with being selected as the speaker at her graduation. “It’s the final validation that my hard work was noticed and rewarded. As someone who is motivated by recognition, I can’t think of anything better.”

Currently employed, Jaraucaro said she has a promising future with great opportunities and “looks forward to the new adventure.”

Amos is a College Credit Plus Frontier High School student who will graduate with transfer degrees in general science and liberal arts. She is in WSCC’s Honors Program and has been accepted into West Virginia University’s Honors Program where this Fall she will study biochemistry.
