Ivan Carl Smith
Ivan Carl Smith, 69, moved from time into eternity on January 11, 2018 at his home in Newport, Ohio following an extended illness. Ivan took up his residence in that Heavenly city because a place had been prepared, reserved and promised to him on June 9, 1983 when God saved his soul. That day was the greatest and most important day of his life, and he never ceased to be thrilled when he told others about it. Ivan was born on June 9, 1948 to Louis Carl Smith and Katie (Lambert) Smith in Camp Kilmer NJ. Over the next 35 years there were many great and important events in Ivan’s life, including his graduation from Glen Bernie Senior High School in Glen Bernie, MD; service in the U.S. Coast Guard; bringing three fine children into the world in an earlier marriage; and his later marriage to his “forever bride” Rosalie (Cameron) Smith on September 4,1982. Ivan was a good man with a good life up to that point, but life for Ivan truly began on June 9, 1983 when he was born of God and united with the greatest love of his life, the Lord Jesus Christ. Ivan never wavered from his love and devotion to the Lord, and service to Him became the driving force in his life. The Lord called Ivan into the Ministry and he was licensed to Preach the Gospel by Eureka Missionary Baptist Church on November 3, 1991. He began his ministry in Sardis, Ohio, later becoming Pastor of Sardis Missionary Baptist Church. Ivan was Ordained on June 10, 2000. He continued pastoring Sardis MBC and later guided them through a difficult relocation from Sardis to Friendly, WV after their church building was destroyed in the 2004 flood. The church in Friendly was renamed Fair Haven Missionary Baptist Church and Ivan continued as Pastor until his death. In the last 35 years of his life, Ivan found the greatest joy in preaching the gospel, organizing and attending church events, and spending quality time with his wife and church family. Ivan worked for many years for Gress Equipment in Marietta, OH and later the US Postal Service. Ivan’s love for Country and Comrades led him into work with the Washington County Veterans as a volunteer driver taking Veterans to and from medical appointments. Ivan will be greatly missed by his family and his church.
In addition to his wife, Ivan is survived by his father-in-law, Delmer Cameron of Newport, OH; son, Christopher Smith of FL; daughters, Katie Ann Smith and Carolyn Susan Smith, both of Weirton, WV; stepsons, Matt Webster, and Mark Webster of Mt. Vernon, OH; granddaughters, Alexus McCune, Brittany Webster, Stephanie Smith, and Sarah Elizabeth Smith; Sisters Phoebe Weeks and Patricia Svadvik; brothers, William Smith, Donald Smith and Richard Smith. Ivan was preceded in death by his parents.
