ST. MARYS, W.Va. -- The South Harrison Hawks were deadeyes at the free-throw line while the Frontier Cougars struggled for the most part.
SHHS converted 18 freebies while FHS made only nine as South Harrison claimed a 61-52 victory over Frontier Thursday at the St. Marys Invitational.
"It was close throughout," said Frontier boss Roger Kirkpatrick. "But they (Hawks) made a run at the end.
"We had a lot of unforced turnovers there in the second quarter. And, if we take care of the ball and make free-throws, we win."
Logan Brookover led the Cougars (7-5) with 22 points. Kyle Daugherty added 18, while non-starter Jacob Gutberlet netted 8.
South Harrison was paced by Caleb Jenkins' 22 points. Nick Fenstermacher chipped in with 16, and Brent Barnette and Jake Yates contributed 8 and 6, respectively.
Sparked by Brookover's six opening-period points, FHS led 11-10 at the end of one. The Cougars were up 4 until Jenkins drained a buzzer-beating triple.
About midway through the second stanza, the Cougars had a 17-10 lead, but it vanished quickly, thanks to the hot hand of Jenkins, who scored 11 points during the eight minutes. At halftime, SHHS led 24-22.
At the start of the third quarter, Daughterty buried a three and Frontier led by one. It then went back and forth the remainder of the period until buckets by Jenkins and Carson Bowie gave South Harrison a 41-36 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Frontier never led during the final eight minutes of action while SHHS stretched its lead to double digits, and coasted home with the victory.
The Cougars are slated to play Wirt County in the tourney's consolation game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
