PARKERSBURG — Students at Wood County Schools are being treated to the books by Dr. Seuss as part of the national Read Across America celebration.

This event takes place annually around the week of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, and the students and teachers in Wood County are wearing hats and other clothes to celebrate the occasion.

As a national event, it’s open to students of all ages. It is not done as a district event, and individual schools can conduct their celebration any way they want.

The national Read Across America day this year is March 2.

At Fairplains Elementary in Parkersburg, the teachers and students are celebrating each day by wearing clothing symbolizing the book they are learning that day.

Abby Noffsinger, a kindergarten teacher at the school, said, “It’s a fun way for the kids to wear a silly hat or their favorite hat and get to enjoy some Dr. Seuss books and learn some rhyming, especially in Kindergarten.

“Usually in March, we celebrate Dr. Seuss Day, and most schools in the area do kind of like a Dr. Seuss spirit week,” Noffsinger said.

“Today was hat day,” Noffsinger said. “And tomorrow we will be wearing green for ‘Green Eggs and Ham.’

“There’s different themes that go with different popular books of Dr. Seuss,” Noffsinger said. “And we take some time out of the day to read them.”

At Fairplains, the reading schedule for the week includes:
