BEVERLY — The Village of Beverly, Ohio was established in 1831, and while it hasn’t been around since the beginning, Beverly Feed and Equipment has been part of the community for a long time.

Beverly Feed and Equipment, located at 19705 State Route 60, has been in business for 63 years, according to Lucy Klintworth, the daughter of the original owner.

Klintworth’s father, Harold Offenberger, graduated from high school in 1958. He was supposed to get a job at Ohio Power, just like his father, Klintworth said.

Offenberger needed some feed ground and went to the feed mill. The people at the mill were busy, so Offenberger just started grinding his own feed. He was offered a job at the mill because of that, she said.

“Three years later he owned it, ” Klintworth said about the mill.

Klintworth said the original mill was located on Fifth Street, where the Fraternal Order of Eagles is located now. In 1967 the business was moved to its current location.

They still write out paper receipts at Beverly Feed and Equipment.

“We are still very old school here,” Klintworth said.

Beverly Feed & Equipment custom grinds animal feed. They sell garden seeds including green beans, pumpkin, sweet corn, and flowers. They also sell clothing, insulated boots, honey, eggs, pond cleaning supplies and more, according to Klintworth.

“We have a lot of stuff for grooming the animals and ear tags to tag the cows and stuff for kittens and dogs. It’s just your mom and pop feed store,” Klintworth said.

“We also manufacture chicken feed, pig feed, horse feed, that’s been a recipe that’s been around since the duration,” she said about the services they provide. “We’re still one of those old fashioned feed mills that you bring in your corn and we will grind it and add to it the things that you want.”

Klintworth said they even put the feed in a sack for customers and load it onto their trucks.

Harold Offenberg and his wife had nine children, and five of them work at Beverly Feed and Equipment. Some of his grandchildren work there too, Klintworth said.

Both of Klintworth’s sons work at the company. One drives a truck and one works in the mill, she said.

One of her sons, Andrew Klintworth, said about working with his family, “it gets tough at times, but it is very fortunate, because we all work together and are able to have a little bit of (fun), and (everyone is) easy to get along with.”

Lucy Klintworth and her sister Marsha Anderson both work in the office and wait on customers in the store. This helps them get to know all of the customers by name, Klintworth said.

After her dad died a couple of years ago, ownership of the store changed to her siblings Marsha Anderson, Ron Offenberger, Anthony Offenberger and Derick Offenberger, Klintworth said.

Ron Offenberger works in the mill. He started working there in 1984, almost 40 years ago, he said.

Besides the siblings that work in the store, they have one full-time employee that is not a family member, and a student that works part-time after school.

Wade Huck is the full-time worker who is not a member of the family. He said he started working at Beverly Feed and Equipment after eighth grade. He wanted a summer job and to pay for a vehicle and insurance and stuff.

Klintworth said that their customers come from all over from places like West Virginia, Morgan County, Caldwell in Noble County, Beverly, and Washington County. During deer season they get people from multiple states. This is because people come from out of state and lease property to hunt and they buy shelled corn from Beverly Feed and Equipment.

“It’s a big time for us,” Lucy said of deer hunting season.

Robert Huffman is a customer at Beverly Feed and Equipment.

“It’s a great place to shop,” Huffman said.

The business is family owned and has great service and “good prices on your beef feed, and anything you want,” he said.

Beverly Feed and Equipment is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays.
