Trick-or-treating tradition slated for the week ahead
With Halloween falling on a Monday, many Mid-Ohio Valley communities have officially set their trick or treat times on that date, although some are turning their little ghosts and goblins loose on Saturday instead.
Marietta officials don’t have to decide when to slate their activities each year. The last Saturday in October has been designated in the city code for years.
The nonprofit National Safety Council warns that children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than any other day. They recommend a responsible adult accompany young children while trick or treating.
For older children going alone, the NSC recommends parents plan and review an acceptable route, agree on a specific time to return home and travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and to stick with their friends.
Those who are out on the road during trick-or-treat times should watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs; enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully; and keep an eye out for kids in dark clothing. New, inexperienced drivers should be discouraged from driving during trick or treating, according to nsc.org.
