The Devola Volunteer Fire Department responded to an accident that followed a high-speed car chase on SR 60 near Greenleaf Landscapes Saturday evening.

According to Devola VFD Chief Harold Newlen, officials with the Marietta Police Department were in a car chase with a vehicle containing three individuals. The driver of the truck stopped the car and fled to the Muskingum River where he had to be rescued by officials with the Marietta and Reno fire departments.

The two individuals in the truck were transported to the hospital and one of the passengers had injuries.

“The car chase was initialized by the Marietta Police Department, we were called in to respond to the wreck,” said Newlen.

Newlen wanted to thank the Reno and Marietta fIre departments for their assistance in the rescue.

Marietta Police Department Captain Aaron Nedeff said the chase began on the west side of the city around 9 p.m. when an officer passed the truck. He said the cruiser didn’t turn the lights on and wasn’t pulling the truck over but the driver “suddenly took off going 50-60 mph on Gilman Ave.”

The officer proceeded to turn on his lights and go after the truck, which continued down Washington Street to Colegate Drive where the truck struck a telephone pole.

“The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed but kept going to Muskingum Drive,” said Nedeff. “The car lost a tire and the car stopped on SR 60 where the driver then got out and ran to the river.”

Nedeff said the driver was stranded on a boat and had to be rescued by Marietta VFD officials.

He said the driver was taken to Marietta Memorial Hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

“Two of the passengers said they told the driver to stop and the driver refused, so right now there’s no charges, but he will be arrested once he’s out,” said Nedeff.

He said the driver wasn’t the owner of the truck.

Nedeff said he would be charged with kidnapping because the passengers wanted out of the car and he refused to let them out. He would also be charged with pursuit and aggravated vehicular assault.

Nedeff said there will be more updates about the individual and the charges soon.
