Gloria Clark Brown
Gloria Clark Brown, 84, of Marietta, OH, passed away peacefully at home on December 4, 2022, with her devoted husband, Gary Brown, at her side.
Gloria was born in Crescent City, California, on June 20, 1938, a daughter of the late George and Velma Clark and the younger sister of George Clark, Jr., Ronald Clark and Joanna Clark Sypkens.
Surrounded by books and art, Gloria grew up to be a gifted writer, poet, cartoonist, painter, businesswoman and dazzling storyteller. She studied philosophy and sociology at Sacramento State University, and later earned her bachelor’s degree in business from Park College while juggling the myriad responsibilities of being the mother to eight children.
Gloria’s keen mind and sharp wit were legendary. She could fill a room with laughter as easily as she could wow an audience of three-star generals at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, where she was a configurations manager for many years.
She was admired for holding court in her busy, fragrant kitchen while making magical things happen with ordinary food. Known for her intense interest in politics and religion, Gloria could also lead dynamic discussions with her deep knowledge on diverse topics–from history, nature, desegregation, apartheid, hypnosis, gardening, sewing, to science and UFOs.
Along with albums filled with zany cartoons, walls hung with her beautiful paintings and a notebook of luscious poetry, Gloria leaves behind a delightful tradition of reading stories with a flair for fun. Who didn’t love hearing her read a book with each character coming to life with a distinct voice and attitude?
Gloria will be forever cherished by her husband of 25 years, Gary Brown, who was her devoted caregiver through a prolonged illness. A special shout out to Shrivers Hospice caregivers Brea and Seena, for their gentle compassion in Gloria’s final weeks of life.
She will be remembered fondly by her children Laura Camille Grolla, Lili Lenore Grolla Macklin, Aaron Paul Grolla, Guy Francis Grolla, Theresa Maureen Grolla McMillan, Mia Francesca Grolla Davis, and Gigi Garland Gibbs.
Gloria’s grandchildren, Jeremiah Wesley, Amanda Vitt, Brandon Grolla, Nathan Peck, Andra Peck, Rondie Gibbs III, and Reyah Gibbs, will carry on her memory each time they read a book with her special style.
Gloria believed intensely that she would be welcomed in heaven by her beloved son Leif Patrick Grolla, as well as her cherished parents and siblings. A Celebration of Gloria’s exceptional character and life will be held in 2023. Online condolences may be made at www.hadleyfh.com.
